It’s a lovely spring day to welcome the floral ceramics of Isabella Lepri to the Gallery 🪻

Born and raised in Milan, Isabella moved to London in her early twenties. She studied Anthropology at LSE and spent 18 months in the Bolivian Amazon. In 2010 she encountered ceramics and it was love at first touch. She took classes with Matt Sherratt at London’s City Lit, and then with North London potter Ricky Grimes.
She moved to Cumbria in 2019 and started working in the delightful and inspiring settings of Brougham Hall near Penrith. Her work is wheel-thrown stoneware. She makes tableware as well as vases inspired by rocks and lichens on the Cumbrian fells. She is a member of the Eden Valley Artistic Network and of the Northern Potters Association.

Call into the Gallery Tues-Sat 10-5 to see the full collection.

Mixed metals is a trend we are definitely on board with this season 🤩
We are pleased to welcome to the gallery the jewellery of Handmade by LollaMac

LollaMac is a range of contemporary jewellery, all designed and handcrafted by Clare using traditional silversmithing hand tools and techniques, from her studio in rural Northumberland.
Clare says “I work with sterling silver, copper and brass, the ‘mixed-metals’ look being a signature of the brand. My style is simple, clean and minimalist. Nothing in your face, but hopefully striking nonetheless, with a cohesive collection suited to any occasion.”

A small selection of the Lolla Mac collection is available on our website now.

Louise is a professional Painter and Printmaker based in London. She is also a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
It is apparent in all of Davies’s work that her love of the environment is paramount, and her intuitive use of the various media testament to her mastery of these techniques.

We have had lots of new jewellers join us in the Gallery recently and we are thrilled to share with you the beautiful lampwork glass of CeeGee Jewellery

CeeGee Jewellery Design is the home of lampwork glass jewellery handmade by glass artist Carolyn Grant. From her workshop in rural Cheshire she use a centuries old technique called lampworking to make individual glass beads using a propane and oxygen powered torch. The glass forms the focal part of her jewellery, resulting in a wearable piece of glass art.

We are pleased to welcome to the gallery the prints of HuPa Linocut.

Matt Hooper is a self-taught professional printmaker, working from his studio in Leeds. He makes linocut prints following both the traditional Japanese Woodblock style and more contemporary linocut methods, a reflection of his passions for both subjects. After 30 years in a Leeds printing factory, and witnessing the terrible waste this industry creates, Matt decided to leave the industry with the goal of making every piece of paper count and to turn it into something beautiful. His choice of subjects is wide and varied, from nature to Japanese themes with an occasional piece of pop art.

These are just some of the beautiful range we have, call into the Gallery Tues-Sat 10-5 to see the full collection.

Explore contemporary craft in the heart of Leeds City Centre’s Cultural Quarter...

The Craft Centre and Design Gallery, tucked underneath Leeds City Art Gallery and next door to Visit Leeds, provides a place for escapism, quiet, calm and a place to tend to your wellbeing. Making time for yourself amongst an often hectic lifestyle has been proven to assist with an improved state of mind. There has been much discussion recently in the sector as to how craft practices can improve this, and galleries certainly provide a tranquil creative space within our busy city centre. We also support the mental health of makers, who, without galleries like ours (which are few and far between) would be isolated, unsupported and would have to rely largely on internet sales. We passionately believe that handmade items allow people to take something home that brings them joy, and counteracts the kind of disposable culture that we are increasingly seeing take over both public mindsets, putting independent businesses and the environment at risk.

Working with makers and supporting their development and creativity has enabled us to provide a unique visitor experience for a growing audience of those wishing to learn more about the skill, talent and originality behind contemporary craft. The support of our designers, visitors and customers over these remarkable years has been crucial in the success of the Craft Centre and Design Gallery. We hope you enjoy what the future has in store as we continue to bring you the very best in contemporary jewellery, ceramics, limited edition prints, glass, textiles, wood and mixed media by some of the most exciting makers in the UK today. A lot of our makers are from Yorkshire too and these can be recognised in the gallery wherever there is a Yorkshire Rose symbol next to their display.
