Hidden Histories: An UnCivil War: The 1645 Siege of Leicester

Join tour guide Jim Butler, Hidden Histories of Leicester, on a journey back to the summer of 1645! The town of Leicester was besieged by Royalist forces and suffered the bloodiest 48 hours in its long history.

Discover stories of bravery and barbarism whilst exploring the sites and settings for some of the bloodiest fighting in the town.

This weekend Heritage Sundays!

Explore Leicester’s rich history through a series of free heritage openings clustered around The Newarke and Montfort University Leicester (DMU) campus, just minutes from the city centre.

Discover remarkable buildings that tell the story of Leicester from its Roman origins to its manufacturing heyday, alongside peaceful outdoor spaces including Castle Gardens and hidden city gardens.

Guided tours led by local history experts are also available:

11am - The Magazine
12:30pm - Leicester Castle Great Hall
2pm - St Mary de Castro Church

Tickets for guided tours: £6 adults, £5 concessions (over 60s, students and children). Each tour lasts one hour. Advance booking is recommended via our website or in person at the Guildhall.

Sunday 31 May, 28 June, 26 July, Sunday 30 August and Sunday 25 October.

'Hidden Histories: High Flying Around' A walking tour with local historian Shaun Knapp this Sunday 31st May 2026.

Visit the venues and hear the remarkable stories relating to Leicester’s 1960s music scene. This walk brings back to life the buildings long since demolished, the groups who packed out the venues and the people who filled the halls and clubs. Find out how some of the biggest names in music played some of the city’s smallest venues.

Your guide, Shaun Knapp, is the author of High Flying Around (I & II) and Mods: Two City Connection. He was also co-curator of the Mods: Shaping a Generation and Punk: Rage and Revolution exhibitions which were recently held at Leicester Museum & ARt Gallery.
