Coming up at the end of this month at Newhaven Marine workshops is an exhibition of mine and my mum’s artwork.
Atrium Aug 27 – 30 | Thur – Sun
10am – 4pm Thur – Sat | 10am – 3pm Sun

Val primarily works with textiles, stitch and mixed media. Nev, with paint, wood and canvas.
There is a sadness at the core of this exhibition in that Val, who has come down to live with me, her son, has Alzheimer’s disease and has limited capacity to acknowledge her own work. There are days when she is more lucid and takes delight at looking, through her one good eye, at her own creations. On these days I watch her energy return and her sense of curiosity ignited. My mum has returned.
I wanted to display my mum’s amazing dedication to detail; her many workbooks filled with experiments in stitch and design. Her juxtaposition of pattern, colour, texture and shape. I also wanted to acknowledge her influence on me and my own creative output.

A typical treasure trove of found rusty metal. One of my mum's favourite things to be incorporated into the work. Then we have a collection of teabags, a plastic heel, some leaves and a flattened food can; and finally a finished piece made with a fabric base, rusty metal, semi melted glass and stitching.

Here's a selection from some of the many pieces around Val's home. It's worth noting some of the processes used to get to the final. For instance, the 3 panels full of circles uses dried parsnip, bound with wool and stitched to a textured background.

I set this page up for mum who spent many years making these beautiful works of art from fabric, textiles, shells, stones, rusty metal, glass, sticks, beads and other found materials.
I remember many a walk where mum would trailing behind , looking at the ground for squashed rusty coke cans and the like for her latest project.
It's when you get close you see the many layers of detail, the river of thread running along the surface; what you assumed was a stone of a piece of bark turns out to be a painstaking build of fabric, treated paper and paint.
Taking inspiration often from nature, through her many scrapbooks she would start with the source material and keep subverting it until an abstraction emerged.
