100 years ago today on 29th May 1926 the Llangollen National Council of Women held an open air rally for the North Wales Women's Peace Pilgrimage on the Smithfield (Market St Car Park)
The platform was decorated in blue and orange the pilgrimage colours. Miss Matheson spoke as did Mrs Thoday and Miss Woolsey. Mrs Silyn Roberts complied with repeated request for a "few words in Welsh" - to the joy of the large crowd.

The picture shows Market St in the 1920s with rows of charabancs. Looks as though it was just as hard to get a parking space then!

A Rare Smile

A recently rediscovered fragment of an abbot’s grave slab from North Wales may offer an unusual glimpse of a medieval personality. An archaeologist analyzed the two-foot-long stone piece and found that it once lay atop the tomb of an abbot named Howel, who led an important Welsh abbey around 1300. The slab depicts Howel in realistic fashion—rare for the period—and wearing a broad smile.

Records suggest Howel was a power broker during the period and might have been seen as an important source of stability in the community.
