As part of , we’d like to celebrate our wonderful gardening volunteers, Vivien and Isobel. 🌿 We asked them a couple of questions about volunteering at Kilmartin Museum:

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at the museum?
"Meeting visitors and staff, having a sense of belonging, being part of the museum’s work, and having something meaningful to do."

Why did you decide to volunteer at the museum?
"I wanted to be outside, have a sense of purpose, be part of a group, and help in the village where I live."

A huge thank you to Vivien, Isobel, and all our volunteers for their time, enthusiasm and support. We couldn't do it without you.

The Kintraw Standing Stone sits quietly in a field just a few miles north of Kilmartin. It is believed to be erected around 1800 BC and still stands about 13 feet tall, with views over the sea.

The stone has a strange notch near its top, and many believe it once lined up with the winter solstice sunset.

Around it lie the remains of three burial cairns, showing this was once an important place for the people who lived here long ago. The standing stone fell in a stormy winter in 1978–79 and was later set back upright, though it no longer faces exactly the way it once did.

Local legend says it marks the grave of a Norse prince, which is why it is still known as the Danish King’s Grave. Today, it’s a place caught between history and story, loved by walkers, photographers, and anyone drawn to old stories.

We have work being carried out to repair the churchyard wall in the back car park (behind the church) over the next few months. This section of the car park will have reduced parking available and at times the footpath into the Glebe field will not be accessible either. We will notify visitors when this will be and signpost the alternative route.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our ‘Call for Exhibitors’ for our special exhibitions programme in 2027. 📅 We are now in the process of considering all the responses and will be getting back to people in just a months’ time (5th June.)

💬 It would be helpful for us to have constructive feedback on this initial stage of the process, so we can improve the process next time, so please feel free to get in touch via our website enquiry form.

We’ve had some amazing exhibitions in these galleries so far; the latest is ‘Rock Art: Archaeology and Community’, revealing discoveries from prehistoric rock art excavations in Kilmartin Glen in 2023. 🪨

⛏️ This was a joint excavation between Archaeology Scotland and Kilmartin Museum and involved over 40 volunteers - many local - students and school groups in this fascinating process of investigation.

Kilmartin Glen is home to some of the most remarkable examples of rock art in Britain and we are privileged to be involved with current discoveries.

Happy from everyone here at Kilmartin Museum. 🏺

A little bit about us ... Founded in the 1990s and opened to the public in 1997, the museum was created to help protect, interpret and share the extraordinary archaeology of Kilmartin Glen, home to one of the richest prehistoric landscapes in Scotland.

Today, we care for more than 22,000 artefacts, many discovered locally, including prehistoric pottery, ancient stone tools, Bronze Age weapons and carved stones that help tell the story of over 12,000 years of human history in Argyll.

From history lovers and archaeology enthusiasts, to families, school groups and visitors travelling from around the world, we’re proud to welcome people of all ages to explore the stories, landscapes and discoveries that make Kilmartin Glen so important.

Private Tours now available 📣

We were blessed with glorious weather for our trip up to Dunadd last week.

Jacquelyn and Myrtle delivered a private tour to bring this nationally important monument to life, showing how the ancient fort developed over time to become a Royal Centre of the Gaelic-speaking Kingdom of Dál Riata, where our Kings were crowned.

After a hike up the hill (in the footsteps of kings), participants were rewarded with amazing views over the Moine Mhòr raised peat bog and National Nature Reserve.

Did you know that we are able to offer private tours to not only Dunadd but several other monuments around Kilmartin Glen, including the Linear Cemetry.
