“Of all the portraits I can think of, the ones Bacon made of Lucian Freud in the mid-1960s are among the most painful… What Bacon saw when he looked at the famously beautiful Freud was his own loathsomeness reflected.’”
Charles Darweth quoted in The Daily Telegraph (3rd January 2011).

David Hockney’s Yosemite Series captures the grandeur of the national park through vibrant digital drawings created on his iPad.

In the works Hockney reimagines the iconic landscapes of towering cliffs, waterfalls, and dense forests with bold color, luminous light, and dynamic line, merging the immediacy of digital technology with the depth of traditional landscape painting. The series reflects his ongoing fascination with how new tools can expand the possibilities of artmaking, allowing him to work directly in nature with speed and spontaneity while still conveying layered textures and atmosphere.

The August edition of Baldwin’s ‘On View’ focuses on Annie Morris’ 2023 work ‘Bronze Stack 3 - Cobalt Turquoise’.

Bronze Stack 3 reflects Annie’s signature exploration of tactile forms and resonant colour. Rising nearly two metres tall, this totemic sculpture commands attention with its delicate balance and vibrant patina, positioning each rounded volume in a lyric ascent.

The vertically stacked spheres—crafted from patinated bronze and anchored by steel—engage with gravity in a dialogue of tension and equilibrium. The cool, luminous hue of Cobalt Turquoise, emblematic of Morris’ evolving palette, imbues the work with both serenity and subtle disquiet.

The work very clearly aligns with the artist’s broader artistic trajectory of transforming intimate, psychological experiences into materially and spatially immersive works. Through her series of stack sculptures she excavates themes of balance, memory, and emotional architecture—inviting viewers to sense the gravity not only of matter, but of inner worlds held in shape.

Annie Morris (b. 1978) is a British multidisciplinary artist based in London, whose practice spans sculpture, painting, drawing, and tapestry. She studied at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art, then at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Giuseppe Penone (1997–2001), and completed her education at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 2003.

Since the early 2000s, Annie has steadily built an international presence through solo exhibitions, institutional projects, and art fair presentations. Following her studies in Paris and London, she first began exhibiting widely in the UK, with early recognition coming through her participation in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the 2012 group show Merging Bridges at the Baku Museum of Modern Art in Azerbaijan.

‘Art is like medicine – it can heal. Yet I’ve always been amazed at how many people believe in medicine but don’t believe in art, without questioning either.’
