Last weekend to catch our ‘Escapism’ show, featuring conceptual photographs by three talented artists:

Despite the location and cultural environment that separate people, the search for their place in society and who they are remains of fascination and a mystery to all humans regardless of their time in history. What unites all three artists is the search for authentic experiences as an attempt to escape an “uncomfortable” reality. They use their art to express their own individuality and inner conflict, but also to connect with others and express a shared identity. They question stereotypes and conventions while exploring attributes such as gender, sexuality and emotions.

‘Fragment of Poverty’ by the talented

“Fragments of Shame” reflects unwanted aspects and emotions regarding the identities of the self, its innate desires and unloved sexualities that have been suppressed and hidden away — both consciously and subconsciously. Sebastian looked at the sensibility and quality of the emotion (“shame”), that surfaced daily, translating it through light, colour, space and makeup into visible fragments.

Together as a series — Fragments of Shame allows the viewer to question their own process of experiencing and releasing shame.

‘Hide and Seek’ from the powerful book ‘A Q***r Odyssey’ by Brandon Moss

When Brandon was younger his sexuality haunted him, he never understood why he was attracted to the same gender and the thought of finding out scared him. Frequently, Brandon would find himself waking up and heading into the bathroom to stare at his own reflection, asking himself why he found it so hard to be proud of what he saw looking back at him. Brandnon would regularly tell himself that being gay was wrong, even the word ‘gay’ made Brandon feel uncomfortable. His sexuality started to have effects on his personal appearance, Brandon started worrying about how he should present himself in front of others, he didn’t want people knowing his true self in case it pushed people away. To this day, Brandon still finds it hard to accept his sexuality, some days it defines him. But he reminds himself that he can’t help who he loves . . . Being his true self is all he needs to be. Brandon created ‘A Q***r Odyssey’, as a visual story into his mind as a proud gay man. For Brandon this book represents the journey he took to accepting himself, whilst also showcasing the pure beauty of q***r people.

‘Phoenix’ from ‘And Then I Remembered’ series by 🖤
‘This series of portraits explores my own connection to the natural world. Women and nature are aligned in a variety of ways from symbolic to material. The concept of connecting women with nature dates back to the times of ancient classical mythology, with several goddesses being strongly connected to the earth, to animals, to different stars and planets.
In this project I look at women and different parts of the experience of being a woman through the rawness of nature. My goal is to show the raw nature of our beauty, of our resilience, endurance, power, gentleness, vulnerability. The project “And Then I Remembered” is about bringing back memories from long time ago, from deep inside women’s DNA, from the times when we were free to worship the forces of nature, sexuality and beauty. It is time to claim our powers back, to accept our sacredness and our important role in this world for the benefit of all beings and Mother Earth.’
