Did you know that in 2024-2025 the Centre supported collaborative projects in Mexico and El Salvador? These supported projects were based on Latin American collections at the British Museum and led by BM colleagues, researchers and artists in Latin America, Europe and the UK. We are extremely happy and grateful to have been able to contribute to these amazing projects exploring the worlds of cacao and the cultural, material, and linguistic universes present in Mesoamerican codices.

As the year draws to a close and we reach the end of our funding cycle, we are pleased to share the projects developed over the past two years. In collaboration with local community members, researchers, artists, and museum colleagues across Latin America and the UK, SDCELAR delivered five core projects, while also supporting collection visits, co-hosting public events, and contributing to increase collection accessibility at the British Museum.

Como parte del proyecto de revisitar las colecciones del Chocó del Museo Británico (), la artista afrocolombiana Astrid González () presenta ‘Azotea’, un docuarte en el que los objetos del museo cobran vida a través de diálogos con sabedores y portadoras de las tradiciones culinarias del Pacífico colombiano 🌿🍲

Junto a la cineasta raizal, antropóloga visual e historiadora Ana María Jessie (), y la fotógrafa, cineasta y comunicadora social afrocolombiana Laura Ríos (), las realizadoras tejen un poderoso relato visual a partir de las voces de Carlos Murillo, Hermes Sinisterra, Ofelia Mosquera y Diana Mosquera, en diálogo con el territorio y los instrumentos que forman parte de la colección del museo.

Hoy recibimos una visita muy especial de la Embajada de Colombia en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 🇨🇴

En el marco de la celebración de los 200 años de relaciones diplomáticas entre ambos países, la visita incluyó un recorrido por las colecciones de América Latina en el Museo Británico. Con un enfoque especial en los proyectos de SDCELAR y las colaboraciones recientes en Colombia, esperamos seguir estrechando nuestros lazos en la región y seguir sembrando nuevas posibilidades de colaboración a futuro.

🇨🇴Estamos emocionados de compartir la página web del proyecto de Colombia, desarrollado en torno a las colecciones del Chocó.

A lo largo de este proyecto, hemos revisitado estas colecciones, despertando historias vinculadas a la gastronomía, los conocimientos ancestrales y la espiritualidad, desde una perspectiva afrodiaspórica.

Nos enorgullece haber trabajado con un grupo excepcional de mujeres que no solo activaron el saber inscrito en los objetos, sino que también hicieron visible la resistencia, el liderazgo y las luchas de las comunidades afro del Pacífico y el Caribe colombiano.

Este proyecto colaborativo contó con la participación de Sandra Mendoza Lafaurie, Diana Mosquera, Juana Alicia Ruiz, Las Tejedoras de Mampuján, Astrid González, Ana María Jessie, Laura Ríos, Liseth Martínez, Adelaida Castro y Martha Castro. 🇬🇧 We are thrilled to share the website for our Colombia project, developed around the Chocó collections.

Throughout this project, we have revisited these collections, uncovering stories that are linked to gastronomy, ancestral knowledge, and spirituality from an Afro-diasporic perspective.

We are proud to have worked with an exceptional group of women who not only activated the knowledge embedded in the objects but also made visible the resistance and leadership of Afro-Colombian communities in the Pacific and Caribbean regions.

This collaborative project included the participation of Sandra Mendoza Lafaurie, Diana Mosquera, Juana Alicia Ruiz, Las Tejedoras de Mampuján, Astrid González, Ana María Jessie, Laura Ríos, Liseth Martínez, Adelaida Castro, and Martha Castro. Recently, SDCELAR Director Danny Zborover and Americas Curator Rose Taylor (.northamerica) had the opportunity to lead a tailored trip of British Museum () Patrons to Mexico.

This enriching visit included archaeological, architectural, and cultural sites, as well as Indigenous communities in Mexico City and Oaxaca, and offered insight into how the Museum’s collections support ongoing research in the region. The Patrons also had a taste of Mexican muralism through the works of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera!

Danny and Rose highlighted local partnerships with researchers, museums, and communities across Mexico, shedding light on the ongoing collaborations supported by the Museum and SDCELAR.

We extend our thanks to all the Patrons, to the museum colleagues who made this possible, and to the amazing partners and collaborators who hosted us during our time in Mexico.

We recently hosted Ana Bravo-Pérez (), who was researching several keros (beakers) and mapping the presence of intricate lacquer and painting techniques within the British Museum’s () collections.

We hope this encounter with the collections will positively inform Ana’s current artistic residency at the Delfina Foundation (). Next Tuesday, the 9th of December, Ana will be showcasing her ongoing research project at Delfina’s Open Studios. Don’t miss it!

Ana Bravo-Pérez is an artist and filmmaker born and raised in Pasto, Andean-Amazonian Piedmont in Abya Yala. Her work draws on migration, memory, and violence. She uses her own migratory and diasporic experiences as a starting point for her artistic projects, investigating suppressed narratives and collective histories. Her experiences have been crucial for building an artistic practice in which personal, decolonial, and geopolitical questions merge. An important theme in her work is how to deal with violence visually without representing it, so it can heal colonial wounds instead. Bravo-Pérez works with coal, cotton, gold, and plants like coca and toquilla to investigate colonial legacies and continued exploitation in the present day.

SDCELAR is proud to announce that two artworks by renowned Wapichana artist Gustavo Caboco (.caboco) have entered the British Museum’s () collections.

Following his Ateliê-Lavrado residency-project, developed in 2023 with Roseane Cadete Wapichana () in collaboration with Jamille Pinheiro Dias (), Caboco produced a series of works responding to his engagement with the Wapishana collections from the Amazonian border between Guyana and Brazil. Both works are centred around cotton as a symbol of resistance, stressing the power of threads and weaving tools to strengthen and reconnect communities beyond the frontiers that separate them.

Caboco is a Wapichana visual artist from Brazil who works within the Paraná–Roraima network and along paths of return to his territory. He was one of four Indigenous curators of the Hãhãwpuá Pavilion representing Brazil at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, and he participated in the 34th São Paulo Biennale in 2021. His multidisciplinary practice spanning drawing, painting, text, embroidery, animation, and performance as documentation proposes new ways of reflecting on the displacement of Indigenous bodies, as well as on memory-making and restitution.

To celebrate the recent reopening of the ‘Heart of the Community - Añima Ijeda’ Community Museum 🏠 in San Pedro Huamelula, we are happy to share the project’s website, which details this partnership between the Chontal community, the , and various regional institutions and collaborators in Oaxaca.

We will soon share more information about how this cultural centre in Huamelula is developing and how it will be a key resource for the Chontal community.
