Each is a stunning and alluring standalone piece. However, when paired together there is a beautifully intriguing dialogue that plays with the tension of looking and being watched.

The eyes of the ‘voyeur’ watch with quiet patience, while I have waited so long for you to look responds with palpable sense of longing. Within Vo**ur, there a subtle, hidden face within the composition that heightens this psychological interplay.

Departing from her signature green, Xanthe Burdett explores a paler and ethereal palette. Here, the skeletal structure of the figure appears as a network of winter branches, crowned with a burst of yellow Forsythia. Throughout the exhibition, boundaries between the human and the botanical dissolve, and the body is reimagined as a permeable field shaped by the processes of growth and decay.

Burdett explores the radical permeability of the human form, positioning the body as a site of constant ecological and mythic flux. Drawing on the dual Aphrodites of Plato’s Symposium, the crystalline, smooth and geometric Venus Coelestis and the organic, fecund and transforming Venus Naturalis’, Burdett’s paintings inhabit the interstitial where the figure is neither fixed nor self-contained, but mutable, porous, and inseparable from the natural world.

A miniature painting of a solitary figure invites you to weave through a silk forest of faint, translucent trees. These veils act as thresholds, drawing the viewer into an immersive environment where the boundary between self and landscape begins to thin. A final solitary figure is cocooned among them. Suspended within these hazy landscapes and existing outside of linear time, these figures carry a mythic atmosphere. They draw on a personal symbolic language that suggests archaeology from a half-remembered cosmology, inviting a profound reconsideration of our own ecological intimacy.

Vegetable Venus by Xanthe Burdett is on view now and continues until 20 June.

Wilder Gallery is proud to present Vegetable Venus, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Xanthe Burdett

Opening Reception: Wednesday, 13 May, 6:30 – 8:30 PM

Please join us for a drinks reception with the artist.

In this evocative new body of work, Burdett explores the radical permeability of the human form, positioning the body as a site of constant ecological and mythic flux.

From large-scale canvases where the body expands into the pictorial field to miniature works on metal leaf that carry the intensity of devotional icons, the exhibition reimagines the body as a mutable terrain. Boundaries between the human and the botanical dissolve into a monochromatic verdancy, inviting a profound reconsideration of our own ecological intimacy.

The exhibition concludes with an immersive installation at the back of the gallery: a silk forest of translucent veils that act as thresholds, grounding the visitor in an environment where the boundary between the viewer and the landscape begins to thin.

26/03/2026

In Chinese art and mythology, the bat (fuˊ) is a potent visual pun for ‘Blessings’ or ‘Good Fortune.’ This auspicious association is rooted in a linguistic rebus: the Chinese word for bat, fuˊ (蝠), is a homophone for the word for “blessings,” fuˊ (福).

For her current exhibition, Fire | Orchid, Hannah Lim has reimagined this symbol within her distinct, anthropomorphic visual language. The energy of the Little Bat S***f Bottle is led by its central motif: a vibrant orange bat depicted mid-descent. In Chinese iconography, a downward-flying bat is a literal visual play on fú dào le, signaling that ‘Blessings have arrived.’ By pairing this wish for happiness with her signature mythic forms, Lim transforms the s***f bottle into a contemporary object of protection and prosperity. 🧧🦇
