Harald Notini was a Swedish designer and interior architect whose career spanned the transition from the intricated and detailed designs of the Art Nouveau period, to the sleek functionality of Modernism, passing through the neoclassical ornamentation of Swedish Grace. Born in 1879, Notini became a defining figure in 20th-century Swedish decorative arts, particularly through his long-standing collaboration with the renowned metalwork manufacturer Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik.

Notini’s education was rooted in the classical tradition, having studied at the Technical School (now Konstfack) in Stockholm and later in France and Germany. This international exposure allowed him to master a wide range of materials, including bronze, crystal, and ceramics.

For several decades, Notini served as the artistic director at Böhlmarks. His portfolio there was prolific, ranging from grand ornate chandeliers designed for public buildings and luxury residences, to modernist lighting, mirrors and furniture that emphasized clean lines and high-quality craftsmanship.

His work is characterized by a perfect balance between technical precision and aesthetic elegance. Today, Notini's designs are highly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian vintage, representing a bridge between the craftsmanship of the past and the minimalism of the future.

Upstairs #12
A sofa designed by Ole Wanscher for Cado — now sold — is flanked by two teak bedside tables with raised-edged tops. On the table to the left in the picture stands a table lamp by Eva Stæhr-Nielsen. These three pieces were all made in Denmark in the 1960s.

The pictures on the walls, from left to right, are unique artworks by Luigi Montanarini (Italian, 1906–1998), Bernard Myers (British, 1925–2007), and Allan Schmidt (Danish, 1923–1989), followed by Montanarini again and Roberto Barni (Italian, 1939). The two works by Montanarini are now sold.

The pendant with five shades is Swedish and dates to the 1950s; the shades are made of opal glass and decorated with black stripes (see picture no. 9 in the post). The ceiling lamp in the middle, with two glass shades, is an exception in terms of provenance — it is Dutch and was also made in the 1950s. The one further in the back is a 1930s piece by the Danish manufacturer Fog & Mørup. The chair to the right is one of a set of four (now sold) made by Nova in Denmark in the 1960s.

Most pieces in this picture, along with about 150 more, are available on our website, 900artanddesign.com (link in bio). The shop on Lillie Rd is open as usual from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 17:30. Come and say hello!

In the window #13
A brass table lamp by Christian Dell and three stoneware ceramics stand on a desk designed by Helmut Magg and made by WK Möbel. The lamp and the desk were made in Germany in the 1950s, the two orange vases, in the same decade but in Sweden. The black vase is Danish and dates to the 1980s. To 1981 dates the artwork above the desk, which is a charcoal on paper by British scupltor John Maine (RA). Works by Maine are in the Royal Academy and in more prestigious public collections; a large work by him titled 'Sea strata' decorates the London Green Park tube station. The abstract work on the smaller wall is an ink on paper by sculptor Nino Franchina, who had works in the Italian pavillon at the Venice Biennale in 1948, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1958, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1978 and 1988.
More images of these pieces are on our website 900artanddesign.com (link in bio) and more pieces, many of which are not yet on our website are in our showroom at 319 Lillie Rd, open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. Come and see us!

'Dingy sailing on the Thames' by Bernard Myers (British, 1925 - 2007)
Signed 'BM'. Oil on paper, 55 x 75 cm.

Bernard Myers was a London-born artist whose career bridged the worlds of painting, teaching, and writing. After serving in the RAF during the Second World War, he trained at St Martin’s, Camberwell and the Royal College of Art, where he studied alongside Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff and John Bratby. From the beginning, his work combined a curiosity for abstraction with a fascination for observed reality.
In the 1950s and 60s Myers experimented with forms inspired by astronomy, mathematics and the art he encountered on travels through the Middle East and India. Later, his practice evolved into still lifes, landscapes and urban views, with a particular focus on the Thames near his Hammersmith studio, which he took in 1987. He said that his work ‘was dominated by the river’, as shown in his solo exhibition at New Grafton Gallery, 1991. Colour, light and atmosphere became central to his vision, expressed in oils, pastels and drawings.

Parallel to painting, Myers was teacher and writer. He taught at the Royal College of Art for nearly two decades, where his students included James Dyson, and later became Chair of Design at Brunel University. He spent formative periods in India, helping to establish a design centre at IIT Delhi, and was closely involved in shaping what later became the University of the Arts London. His contributions to art writing ranged from monographs to encyclopedias, reflecting his wide knowledge and passion for culture.
Despite health challenges in later years, Myers never stopped working. His final exhibition was held in 2006, only a year before his death, a testament to his determination and love for art. Today he is remembered as an artist who moved effortlessly between abstraction and figuration, as well as a mentor who left a deep mark on British art and design education.

His works are now part of many important museum collections including the Tate Modern, Arts Council Collection (Southbank Centre), Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Government Art Collection, National Railway Museum, and the Royal College of Art.
