[email protected] +44 (0)20 7087 9300 www.thephotographersgallery.org.uk The Photographers' Gallery was founded in London’s Covent Garden in 1971 and was the first public gallery in the UK dedicated to the medium. Over the years it has introduced such international photographers as Juergen Teller, Robert Capa, Sebastião Salgado, Andreas Gursky and Taryn Simon to British audiences, whilst championing

the work of home based practitioners including Martin Parr, Zineb Sedira, Nick Knight and Corinne Day.

In May 2012, after an ambitious two-year redevelopment to offer new and enhanced spaces for exhibitions, learning, retail and social activities, The Photographers’ Gallery re-opened in its new home in Ramillies Street, Soho, London. It continues to present a diverse and critically acclaimed public-programme of exhibitions, events, talks, workshops and courses that encourage deeper engagement with, and learning through the photographic medium.

Join us for special activation of the online exhibition Ghost in the Loop, including a performance by Shaheer Tarar (.info) and a sticker swap on Friday 29 May!

The Compression Zone is a video game performance by artist Shaheer Tarar that explores compression algorithms as one of the primary engines of world-making today. Shaheer will perform the game live, navigating a perilous, multi-resolution dungeon where all the world’s data is sent to be compressed.

The performance acts as both a launch of the online exhibition Ghost in the Loop–featuring newly commissioned work by Shaheer Tarar, Valia Lolidou, Martyna Marciniak, Mariana Marangoni, Linden Derichs and Celune Acheampong–and a closing event for the exhibition Connection Established: Digital Folklore and Web Craft.

Head to our website to book your place for the event!

Chloe Orji () explores the complexities of Black British identity and national symbolism in a new long-read essay 'The Face of a Flag', available now via the link in bio!

"Throughout these artists’ work, we see that the Black British identity is not an internal conflict for us to resolve... it can be a space that allows us to embrace the multifaceted nature of our cultural makeup without forcing us to “choose a side and stick to it.”

Through the works of 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize winner, Rene Matić, alongside works by photographers Stéfan Weil and Myah Asha Jeffers, the piece examines belonging, visibility and the negotiation between Blackness and Britishness.

Join artist and researcher, Louis Porter on Thursday 28 May where he will be launching his new publication, Search Engine (published by Perimeter Editions).

Louis will be in conversation with Writer, Editor and Lecturer Diane Smyth in the Cafe bar.

Search Engine is a series of ‘catalogue cards’ featuring photographs sourced from the Science & Miscellaneous section of the London Library, one of the world’s largest independent lending libraries. The images are ordered as Porter encountered them – alphabetically by subject – on shelves that make neighbours of Sleep and Smuggling and bring together Pleasure, Poaching, and Poisons. The result forms an archaeological exploration of the systems of knowledge that we often take for granted.

20/05/2026

In this video, created to coincide with our We Others exhibition on display at The Photographers' Gallery until 7 June, photographer Donna Gottschalk discusses the people she met within the city.

Donna was well-known for taking in anyone who needed a place to stay. Whether it was girlfriends wanting to spend an evening away from home, teenage runaways trying to escape violence, or q***r youths kicked out by their families - Donna's apartment on 9th Street was a safe haven.

One of these people who came to Donna's door was Marlene in 1969. A waitress at a le***an bar had seen Marlene was completely lost and suggested that she call in at 406 East 9th Street, Donna's place. Marlene, described by Donna as "the most beautiful butch of all time" had hitchhiked all the way from San Diego to New York City.
