The Dark (2021) by artist Anish Kapoor shows a scorching surface that oozes a lava-like liquid - but is it volcanic or bodily?

Painting has always been part of Anish Kapoor's creative language, his recent paintings using palettes of deep reds and obsidian blacks evoke a dark and violent energy.

Acclaimed American artist and activist Nan Goldin is coming to the Hayward Gallery 📸

'You Never Did Anything Wrong' marks Nan's first institutional exhibition in the UK in over 20 years 👏 Closing out our 75th anniversary, this exhibition is a raw and unflinching look at personal relationships, addiction and q***r communities - 'a record of my life that no one can revise'.

Look closely 👀 Can you spot the famous London landmarks? 🏙️

Artist Yin Xiuzhen uses second hand clothing in most of her work, and uses it here to create mini versions of the city’s inhabitants. Did you know that clothing from our Hayward Gallery staff created this Portable City?! 🌟

Looking back this at Jenny Kendler’s ‘Birds Watching III’ 👁️🦅

Originally commissioned for our Dear Earth exhibition in 2023, these 100 eyes represent bird species on the verge of extinction as a result of the climate crisis 🌍

While it's no longer at the Hayward Gallery, its message of encouraging empathy and care for the natural world remains. This commission was made in collaboration with London Zoo, where it was exhibited after the exhibition here closed.

The room you need to be in when you lose your keys 🔑

Keys symbolise many things - new opportunities, keeping something safe, unlocking the door to the comfort of our own home. Keys are everyday objects that keep our valuables safe. We carry them around with us all day, collecting their own web of memories with us along the way 💭

In Chiharu Shiota’s installation ‘Threads of Life’ the keys are connected to each other by thousands of red threads, symbolising the journey they make with us everyday entangling between one another 🧶

Artwork from your perspective 👀

Artist Yin Xiuzhen would often pass by the neighbourhood of Houhai where many retired elders gather to play games, take part in liu niao (bringing caged birds to parks) or recount Peking Opera songs.

With the modernisation of cities, traditional ways of living like this are being left behind and Yin wanted to bring light to the dying community with her piece ‘Beijing Opera’.
