We are delighted to announce that the Gilbert Bayes Award (GBA) 2027 for early career sculptors has just opened for applications.

The Gilbert Bayes Award is given annually by the Society to a small group of outstandingly talented sculptors. It is an opportunity open to sculptors of any age or nationality, with or without formal training, and working in any style or medium. This award is generously supported by the Gilbert Bayes Charitable Trust.

Award winners receive a year of professional development (including talks from guest speakers working in commercial galleries, art charities and private collections), a free year's membership of the Royal Society of Sculptors and inclusion in a group exhibition. Award recipients also have access to all the benefits from membership including the chance to apply for member-only opportunities such as residencies, awards and exhibitions.

The guest judge for the Gilbert Bayes Award 2027 is Kate Davies, arts strategist, consultant and collection expert whose experience includes the Government Art Collection and the Roberts Institute of Art where she was Director (2019-2026). Kate is a Trustee at Site Gallery, Sheffield.

Applications for the Gilbert Bayes Award for Early Career Sculptors 2027 will open next week!

The Gilbert Bayes Award for early career sculptors is given annually by the Society to a small group of outstandingly talented sculptors.

Selected by the sculptor members of the Society’s Board and a guest judge, the award provides vital support during what can be a difficult transition from study to professional practice.

The award is open to sculptors of any age or nationality, with or without formal training and working in any style of media. This award is generously supported by the Gilbert Bayes Charitable Trust.

Artists who have been elected to be members of the Society are NOT eligible to apply. Students are not eligible to apply.

Last chance to submit work for the Brown Hart Gardens in London's Mayfair as the deadline is Monday 24 August.

This is a brand new opportunity for sculptors to show their work in the heart of London's historic Mayfair for a year, in partnership with Stoneman Collins curators of the project for The Beaumont Mayfair .

We are looking for sculpture for four plinths that are located on the corners of Brown Hart Gardens (outdoors), in Mayfair opposite The Beaumont. It is also the site of a new restaurant, Pearl .mayfair which will be opening in the autumn.

Selected artists will be eligible for an exhibition fee of £5,000 per sculpture, recognising the value of the artworks and supporting artists' participation in the programme. The artworks proposed must be finished and in the UK at the time of the submission and available for the full exhibition period (November 2026 - November 2027).

Last chance to apply for membership of the Royal Society of Sculptors as the deadline is Thursday 20 August. We recommend applying by 5pm as no tech support can be provided after that time but the application link is live until midnight.

The Society welcomes applications from established, national or international, professional artists who make sculpture in any of its forms as a significant part of a coherent professional practice, whose work adds to the language of sculpture .

Successful applicants will demonstrate a high level of expertise, experience and contemporary understanding. Applicant’s work should be high quality, distinctive and adds to the language of sculpture; whilst also demonstrating the skilled realisation of ideas. The selection panel is keen to see evidence of enquiry and reflection.

Membership gives you access to a community of expert knowledge, as well as advice and opportunities, expands your network and keeps you up to date. It also gives you recognition: Members and Fellows can use professional accreditation after their name, MRSS and FRSS accordingly.

Examples of exhibition opportunities for members include the annual Summer Show, the London Art Fair and group shows at the Roof Gardens, Kensington and the Chapel at Brompton Cemetery while residencies for members include Eilean Shona in Scotland, Awakenings at Wick in Somerset, The Hugo Burge Foundation in the Scottish Borders, as well as Thread in Sinthian, Senegal and Carraig-na-gCat residency, West Cork, Ireland both in partnership with the Albers Foundation, and Hong Kong in partnership with Crafts on Peel. Members are now also eligible for residencies at Dora House in London following the completion of our 'Creating a Home for Sculptors' project.

Meet Georgia Stoneman and Lizzy Collins, founders of Stoneman Collins Art Advisors

Stoneman Collins was founded in April 2025 by art advisors Georgia Stoneman and Lizzie Collins. Stoneman Collins specialises in forming art collections in major build and renovation projects across sectors to deliver a world class visual experience. Georgia and Lizzie bring a meticulous eye together with their 40 years combined art world experience as gallerists and art advisors and wide network of contacts to offer a seamless, high-level service.

Meet Lisa Edwards, Curator, The Grovesnor

Lisa is an art collection management specialist and has worked with museums, historic houses and private collectors in managing significant cultural collections. For over ten years she has held the role of Curator at Grosvenor, in which she is responsible for the care and management of the family’s private art collection, working with internationally important paintings, sculptures and other decorative artworks spanning the classical to the contemporary.

This autumn, we are delighted to be working with Maisongb to bring to you 'Sculpting with Flour' a very delicious workshop to mark The Big Draw, the world’s largest annual celebration of drawing.

In this workshop, hands-on food play translates ideas, memories, and feelings into an edible artefact using flour: Everything is edible, but also possible. Through this perspective, we'll explore how flour can become a material to build, think, and express ideas.

The workshop ends by sharing a light community meal and reflecting together on what we created together.

Maisongb is a studio funded by Giuseppe Burdo, using food as a material for art, branding and self expression. The practice rotates around how we can find new ways to perceive what's around us, in a playful yet thoughtful way. Maisongb organises community and cultural events, including the upcoming Food Art Fair at Ladbroke Hall.

Alongside Maisongb the workshop will also be led by Ananya Jain, curator and creative practitioner based between London and Delhi. As a facilitator she explores everyday acts of care and resistance, with a particular interest in community building through food and textiles.

Join us on Sunday 20 September & explore 'What Does Home Mean To You?' with Arpita Shah as part of our Year of the Home celebrations 🎉

This year is an exciting one for the Society as we mark 50 years since Cecil Thomas OBE FRBS generously bequeathed his home and studio, Dora House, to us. To honour this milestone, we’re calling 2026 ‘Year of the Home’ and are excited to bring you a packed season of events, exhibitions and activities on that theme, including the grand completion of our project, Creating a Home for Sculptors.

As part of our re-opening weekend, the galleries at Dora House will be open so you can explore the Summer Show 2026 and also join our drop in creative workshop 'What Does Home Mean To You?' with artist and educator Arpita Shah

Visitors of all ages will be invited to write, draw, or describe the meaning of ‘home on a tag, then tie it onto our community home installation using colourful ribbons. A large table will be fully stocked with stationery, ribbons, and coloured paper.

This will be an opportunity to drop in, enjoy tea, juice, biscuits, and meaningful stories together.

One of the exciting things about Dora House reopening is that we are able to host events such as book launches! 📚

We hope you can join us on Monday 12 October for the launch, at Dora House, of Totem: The Untold Story of Sculpture by Jo Baring, art historian and curator. Jo is also the host of the podcast Sculpting Lives and in 2023 was elected as the Frankland Visitor to Brasenose College, Oxford. She is the Director of the Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art and a former Director of Christie's UK.

In this accessible, story-led journey into the heart of sculpture, renowned art historian and curator Jo Baring explores creativity, memory and why we have been driven to make art in this medium since the very beginning of humanity.

Jo examines sculptures from the pre-historic Lion Man figure found in a German cave to an ancient Mayan pyramid that conjures a serpent made of shadows and icons of the Italian Renaissance such as Michelangelo's devastating Pieta. Along the way we encounter in a fresh light the work of twentieth century and contemporary giants such as Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama and Antony Gormley, among others. Lyrical and beautifully illustrated, Totem is a celebration of art, those creating it and those it means something to.
