What does London mean to the European literary imagination?

Last night we celebrated the city’s role as a hub of creativity, culture and connection at Mapping the City – European Writers in London. We had the honour to host the event marking UCL’s 2025 European Literary Map of London Writer in Residence.

Award-winning journalist and director of the European Literary Network, Rosie Goldsmith moderated the fascinating evening of readings and conversation with four remarkable writers: Ciara Broderick (Ireland, 2025 Writer in Residence), Nisrine Mbarki (Netherlands), Domas Raibys (Lithuania), and Iryna Shuvalova (Ukraine). Each writer explored how London shapes—and is shaped by—their stories, identities, and visions for the future of European literature.

Thank you to our co-organisers: UCL European Institute, the European Literature Network, EUNIC London, and all our partners and supporters, the Lithuanian Culture Institute London, the Ukrainian Institute London, the Goethe-Institut London, the Irish Embassy London and the Dutch Embassy London.

Together, we’re helping map the literary soul of London—one story at a time.
