National Historic Ships UK National Historic Ships UK is the official voice for historic vessels in the United Kingdom
(1)

National Historic Ships UK is a government funded, independent organisation which gives objective advice to UK governments and local authorities, funding bodies, and the historic ships sector on all matters relating to historic vessels in the UK. It is successor to the advisory committee on National Historic Ships, set up as a non-departmental advisory body in July 2006. In turn, that organisation

followed on from the National Historic Ships Committee, which emerged from a seminar held in 1991 to discuss the problems facing the preservation of historic ships and vessels in the UK and the evident neglect of this important part of our heritage. National Historic Ships UK carries a wide remit, looking not only at the immediate issues concerning historic vessels in the UK, but also addressing questions relating to the support infrastructure for historic ships, their potential for contributing in the wider economic, social and community context, and maintaining a watch list of vessels abroad with potential UK significance. Strong support was expressed for the creation of a co-ordinating body which could provide an overview of all aspects of historic ship preservation and the Committee was formally launched on 15 July 1992 by Lord Lewin, then Chairman of Trustees of the National Maritime Museum. National Historic Ships UK, carries a wide remit, looking not only at the immediate issues concerning historic vessels in the United Kingdom, but also addressing questions relating to the support infrastructure for historic ships, their potential for contributing in the wider economic, social and community context, and by maintaining a watch list of vessels abroad with potential UK significance.

After just over three months sailing anticlockwise around the UK, we are delighted to invite you to celebrate the completion of the Full Circle voyage with Turn to Starboard and Invictus Games Birmingham 2027.

Since departing Falmouth on 17th March, two tall ships have sailed over 2,000 nautical miles around the UK coastline, visiting 22 ports and involving more than 70 serving and veteran members of the Armed Forces who are wounded, injured, or sick.

Delivered in partnership with Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, Full Circle has showcased the power of challenge, teamwork, and adventure to support recovery, rebuild confidence, and create lasting connections.

As Spirit of Falmouth and Pellew return home to Falmouth, join us in welcoming the crews back and celebrating this remarkable achievement.

A huge thank you to Pendennis Castle for kindly opening their gates free of charge for this special occasion.

Whether you’ve followed the voyage from the start or are hearing about it for the first time, everyone is welcome.

🎬 What started as a university assignment became a distinction winning documentary!

In February 2026, Master's students Isabella Fraser, Scarlett Victoria and Yilin Zhang spent two days filming and interviewing the volunteers and contractors behind the Sutton Hoo Ship reconstruction project.

Their documentary captures the passion, craftsmanship, history and community spirit that drive this unique experimental archaeology project. After a few months of editing, the film earned the team a Distinction from Imperial College London.

We're thrilled with the result and hope you'll enjoy seeing the project through their eyes.
