“Outer space was the image of the absolute impossibility. When I was five years old, my father would point to the moon. And he used to tell me: “Do you see the moon? We will never go there.” It was an absolute impossibility.

And then we saw the astronauts and they related extraordinary things, the Russians and the Americans. [Vladimir] Komarov, the Russian, said he saw 17 sunrises in one day, in one terrestrial day.

And it was something mind blowing, really. It was a big adventure that topped the ’60s. When, in the ’60s, the world looked like a continuous miracle.

And lately we have other ways of looking at that, because I think this excess of pollution is due to the fact that, symbolically, we left Mother Earth. Earth has become old tent, old hat, the house you left behind. And now, I am interested in the people who try to repair that world, to keep going on this planet.”

: “I think when you are confronted with a single piece of my work, you could read it as an iceberg, a toppling cliff or a breaking wave. But I am compelled to represent the changes I am witnessing…I want to set up a narrative for the viewer to communicate the precarious state of ice sheets and glaciers across the globe and the profound effect the effects of warming is having on flooding and sea level rise.

As an artist, I feel working from landscape is very relevant. We are living through a period of rapid change and with the many impacts of human induced climate warming, I am committed to communicating that.” in conversation with

In a recent interview, discusses the impact of climate warming and how this is reflected in her prints, drawings and installations – the artist often uses found pigment and material in her works to bear witness to the rapid change of our seas and landscapes. As she describes “the relationship between mark, process and idea are inextricably linked.”

Join Cristea Roberts Gallery at Atelier JI in London, where ’s new series of screenprints entitled ‘Kings & Queens’ were editioned.

Peter Bennet, master printer comments “Hew Locke’s prints begin with a foundation of perfectly flat matte ink, providing a solid ground for each figure. Upon this base, the artist layered a delicate wash, followed by the application of 23-carat gold outlines. Each character is then brought into sharp relief with a final, highly structured black gloss ink.”

This new suite of fifteen prints by features a bold procession of marching characters that evoke the spirit of carnival, costume and masquerade.
The artist’s use of gold-leaf reflects his interest in the symbolic qualities of the precious metal, its excess, as well as overlapping histories of global market capitalism.

📢 Save the date | This month will open a major exhibition of work by Paula Rego centred around an intensely personal period that the artist spent in her studio from 2005 to 2007.

Focusing on her drawing practice, explored darker and more complex themes than ever before. A major catalyst for this period was the connection she found in the work of writer and director , whose short stories Rego used as an inspiration to create a series of prints.

The playwright’s stories became a channel for Rego to feed her own personal history. The dark, sometimes grotesque, violent, and often tender stories by McDonagh, alongside other tales, saw her embrace narratives that she layered with memories from her childhood in Portugal and later adult life.

Over forty works, several which will be unveiled for the first time, will be exhibited alongside a recreation of Rego’s studio, showcasing the dolls, creatures and objects she made to draw from. This exhibition, a collaboration between The Estate of Paula Rego and Cristea Roberts Gallery, will be open until 17 Jan.

📍Opening Reception | ‘Paula Rego: Drawing from Life’ , London | Wed 26 Nov, 6-7.30pm. DM to RSVP or to find out about the works.
