Mission Ukraine Goes OFFLINE: A Night of Common Ground in London.

On April 16, Mission Ukraine gathered an invitation-only group of 90 guests in London for an offline evening dedicated to connection, culture, and conversation. Hosted at the historic Savile Club, the event created space to step away from headlines and engage more directly with the human dimension of Ukraine’s reality today.

It was an honour to be part of this evening.

The presentation of works by Dmitry Lebedev (1899–1922) at the Salon du Dessin in Paris has concluded with notable success, marking an important moment in the ongoing re-evaluation of the artist’s legacy within the context of early 20th-century European art.

Throughout the duration of the fair, the exhibition attracted sustained attention from an international audience of collectors, museum professionals, and scholars, generating a considered and nuanced engagement with Lebedev’s oeuvre. Long obscured from wider public and institutional visibility, his works reveal a rare synthesis of poetic sensitivity and symbolic depth, offering a compelling insight into the cultural and intellectual atmosphere of his time.

The response to the presentation reflects a growing recognition of Lebedev’s significance within Ukrainian Symbolism, as well as a broader institutional interest in expanding and refining the canon of early modernist practices. The dialogues initiated during the fair reaffirm the relevance of continued research, curatorial focus, and museum inclusion, positioning Lebedev’s work within a wider art-historical discourse.

We are grateful for the thoughtful attention and critical interest the exhibition has received, and remain committed to further advancing scholarly awareness and institutional engagement with Lebedev’s legacy.

The French publication Le Figaro on James Butterwick and Dmitry Lebedev

“The Salon once again became a space of discovery and rediscovery. A notable crowd gathered at the stand of James Butterwick, a specialist in early 20th-century Ukrainian artists, drawn to the works of Dmitry Lebedev (1899–1922), a remarkable Symbolist who died of typhus at the age of 23. His work is distinguished by a rare sensitivity, deeply marked by the turbulent atmosphere of Odessa of that time.

The London dealer had already presented more than 90 works on paper by the artist (ranging from €2,000 to €40,000) at the most recent TEFAF Maastricht, where they attracted considerable attention and lively discussion. At the Salon du dessin, he brought new pieces—true gems, executed both in black and white (Fallen Angel) and in colour (Tristan et Isolde), both dating from 1918”

A client today said. ‘You have woken him up’. What a brilliant description of what is now happening to Dmitry Lebedev. He sat for tens of years, hidden in a cupboard. Now he is international. He will become a feature of future museum exhibitions. Three shows are in the pipeline including, we hope, Ukrainian Symbolism. As we have already taken part in six museum shows of Ukrainian Art 1900-1930, from Lodz to London from Brussels to the Belvedere, we are well placed and are equally determined to continue the Cultural Battle!
