The Breuer Building is one of New York City’s defining examples of Brutalist architecture.

Located at 945 Madison Avenue, the building was designed by Bauhaus-trained architect Marcel Breuer with Hamilton Smith as the original home of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Completed in 1966, the museum stood apart from Manhattan’s growing landscape of glass-and-steel towers. Rather than transparency and lightness, Breuer created a building that felt solid, sculptural and monumental, using concrete and granite to give the museum the presence of a modern fortress for art.

Its most recognisable feature is the dramatic inverted ziggurat façade, alongside distinctive trapezoidal windows designed to carefully control light inside the galleries.

Nearly sixty years later, the building remains one of the city’s most recognisable architectural landmarks. From 2016 to 2020, it housed the 's modern and contemporary exhibitions as The Met Breuer, before being acquired by Sotheby's in 2024.

Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to restore and adapt the building for its new role, preserving many of Breuer’s defining architectural features.

Architect Richard England helped redefine Malta’s architectural landscape through his bold postmodern buildings.

One of the country’s most influential architects, England challenged convention by moving beyond traditional forms and embracing experimentation, creating some of Malta’s most distinctive architecture.

His work is closely associated with critical regionalism - blending modernist ideas with Maltese traditions, alongside Neolithic and Baroque influences.

Across a career spanning more than six decades, England created colourful, almost dreamlike spaces that reshaped religious and urban architecture, helping define Malta’s post-war architectural identity during the country’s transition to independence.

Notable projects include the Dar il-Hanin Samaritan Meditation Garden, St Francis of Assisi Church, Aquasun Lido, St Andrew’s Chapel and Razzett ta’ Sandrina.

Wes Anderson's charming coming-of-age story Moonrise Kingdom was released on this day in 2012 💘

The film marked Anderson’s first full period piece. Co-written with longtime collaborator Roman Coppola, the film was inspired by their memories of young love.

The story follows 12-year-olds, Suzy and Sam, who live on a small island, fall in love, and run away into the wilderness together. As search parties go out to find them, an approaching storm shifts everyone’s attention, raising the stakes of their escape.

Shot on Super 16mm film with cinematographer Robert Yeoman, the production embraced a distinctly 1960s look. Filming took place in Rhode Island with a small, close-knit crew, often trekking through forests with minimal equipment, adding to the film’s intimate feel.

See the film’s costumes, props and more in Wes Anderson: The Archives, until 26 July 2026. Book tickets via the link: https://bit.ly/3ZqUquP

Nestled in the Californian desert is the postmodern gem Monument House.

Architect Josh Schweitzer originally designed it in 1990 as retreat for friends and family. It features three colourful cube-shaped buildings.

Featuring geometric-shaped windows and doors painted different colours, Monument House was created to enhance the shades of the surroundings.
