About Us

Carpenters Workshop Gallery transcends classical borders in terms of art and design.

Its proposal stands just at the intersection of these two universes: reaching precisely a symbiosis of art and design. Carpenters Workshop Gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and already established artists and designers going outside their traditional territories of expression. The gallery is actively involved in the research and production of the limited e

dition works exhibited. The choices are guided by the research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance; a relevance that appears as an evidence. The gallery relies on the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loic Le Gaillard. They first opened a space in London’s Chelsea in 2006 in a former carpenter’s workshop; they then followed with a second space in Mayfair in 2008. The opening of a 600 square metre space in Paris in 2011 in the heart of Le Marais district, an address steeped in history as it was previously occupied by the Galerie de France for several decades, was a return to their roots.

2015 marks a major turning point for the gallery with the opening of Carpenters Workshop | Roissy, a unique 8,000 meter square space dedicated to artistic research and development, bringing together the elite of artisans, an homage to the French heritage of ‘Arts Décoratifs’. Carpenters Workshop Gallery London at Ladbroke Hall is the latest step in the gallery’s remarkable development. This new space opening in April 2023 confirms the leadership and dominant position of the gallery in today’s international territory of art and design. The artists represented by the gallery are:

Opening soon | Blue Weather | Vincent Dubourg

In Blue Weather, Vincent Dubourg presents a new body of sculptural work that explores transformation through material, colour and form. Moving between bronze, wood and aluminium, Dubourg reconfigures familiar materials to question how we organise and inhabit space.

One of the works at the centre of the exhibition, Vibration Core, places a substantial bronze form in a precise relationship with the space around it, using weight, structure and balance to create a palpable sense of tension. Recast in a deep cobalt blue, the work transforms the density and permanence of bronze through colour, giving the abstract form a distinctly contemporary presence.

Lightness of Form, the exhibition currently on view at our New York gallery, presents a focused selection of works by acclaimed British designer Terence Woodgate. Developed in close dialogue with pioneering Formula 1 engineer John Barnard, the works explore the relationship between material and structure.

Carbon fiber sits at the heart of this exploration, valued not only for its exceptional strength and lightness, but for its ability to move between rigidity and flexibility, opening up new possibilities for form. Woodgate’s approach is one of restraint and precision, reducing each object to its essential lines while allowing the material and structure to become part of the visual language. The result is a collection that feels both engineered and organic, where technical innovation is expressed through an almost effortless sense of lightness.

The collaboration between Woodgate and Barnard brings together two distinct disciplines, combining sculptural clarity with engineering precision to create works that sit between function and innovation.

Lightness of Form is on view at our New York gallery until October 15.

Spanning three floors of our Paris gallery, Dialogues brings different generations, materials and artistic languages into conversation, shifting the focus from individual practices to the relationships between them.

On the first floor, Ingrid Donat reinterprets Pierre Jeanneret’s modernist forms through a series of subtle interventions. Reupholstered Committee Chairs and a Lounge Set, alongside a Jeanneret Desk with leather padding bearing Donat’s signature motifs, create a layered exchange between Jeanneret’s architectural clarity and Donat’s expressive language.

On the second floor, the Campana Brothers and Nacho Carbonell transform mesh, fibre and found elements into tactile, organic compositions, where materials appear almost grown rather than made.

On the top floor, Wendell Castle and Rick Owens offer two radically different approaches to wood: one fluid and biomorphic, the other monolithic and architectural. Together, these encounters explore how forms, materials and ideas evolve through exchange.

Series: Damien Anger at our gallery in Los Angeles shares more on Roger Herman’s California Poppies, an exhibition that brings together the artist’s vibrant paintings, sculptural ceramics, and functional works, exploring his distinctive approach to color, texture, and form.

From layered depictions of poppies and mountains to irregular ceramic vessels shaped by hand and instinct, Herman’s works reflect his fascination with the natural world and the possibilities of material.

Sylvain Rieu-Piquet’s practice unfolds at the meeting point of mineral, vegetal, aquatic and animal worlds, where forms seem to emerge, grow and transform organically.

Based in Paris, the artist creates jewellery, ceramics and drawings that explore nature not as something fixed, but as a living, sensual force. Tree-like structures, flowing lines and soft, liquid curves extend across his drawings, evoking wild vegetation and the constant movement of growth. In his jewellery and ceramic works, these organic gestures take physical form, shaped in brass, bronze, silver and gold and brought to life with sapphires, rubies and garnets.

Clay, with its raw and tactile qualities, becomes another language through which Rieu-Piquet investigates the relationship between the natural world and creative expression. Rather than depicting nature, the artist allows its forms and rhythms to shape the work itself, creating objects that sit between sculpture, jewellery and the living world.

Series: Henri Charreau takes a closer look at Ashiesh Shah’s Taamr, the designer’s first solo UK exhibition, currently on view at Ladbroke Hall in London.

Taamr, Sanskrit for copper, is both the title of the exhibition and its central work, a composition of copper, antique mirror, Rudraksha beads and Channapatna beads. Here, Shah imagines the material as a symbol of transformation, bringing together traditional references and contemporary craftsmanship.

Drawing on the visual language of the Naga Babas, whose Rudraksha adornments embody devotion, protection and renunciation, Taamr reflects Shah’s ongoing exploration of cultural memory and materiality.

Series: Haydn West, co-founder of deBiousse & West, our collaborators on The Language of Glaze exhibition, and curator of the show, talks about some of his favourite works by Shimizu Uichi, on view at Ladbroke Hall until 28 August.

Highlights include The Snowman Jar from 1996, featuring the playful inscriptions that became increasingly prominent in Shimizu Uichi’s work towards the end of his career. The character means ‘snow’ in Japanese.

Also featured is Horai Celadon Peony Jar, made in 1985, the same year Shimizu Uichi was designated a Living National Treasure of Japan. It can be seen as one of the artist’s most celebratory works.

At The Workshop in Mitry-Mory, craftsmanship is built through teamwork, shared knowledge and experience.

For over 20 years, Michael Carvalho has been shaping the Wax Workshop, working alongside a dedicated team of artisans to transform artists’ and designers’ ideas into precise wax models — the first, and essential, stage in their journey towards becoming metal sculptures through the lost-wax casting process.

Often long and meticulous, modelling requires patience, precision and an intimate understanding of the material. Each model carries the knowledge and experience of the artisans who shape it, evolving through constant exchange and collaboration before moving into the next stages of production.

Opening soon | Blue Weather

Blue Weather bring together sculptural works by Vincent Dubourg, exploring force, structure and transformation.

Drawing on Constructivism and Brutalism, Dubourg works between architecture, symbolism and everyday life. His objects respond to the systems that shape society, including power, belief and hierarchy, while questioning the idea that the world can be organised through reason alone.

Bronze is central to the works. Dubourg works with the material from its molten state through to its final cast and polished surface. The process shifts bronze from a state of extreme heat and instability into something controlled and permanent, while retaining evidence of its original force. Across Blue Weather, this movement from turbulence to structure becomes a way of considering transformation.

Wonmin Park’s Stone & Steel brings together volcanic rock and industrial steel in a study of material, transformation and precision. Mined in Japan, the volcanic stones are shaped by geological processes that have taken place over millennia. Their ochre and brown exteriors reveal dark, iron-rich interiors when cut, with natural oxidation creating distinctive variations across each stone.

Park preserves these individual characteristics while introducing a contrasting language of industrial precision. Each stone is highly polished to achieve a deep, jet-black, marmoreal surface, while hand-shaped steel table tops are precisely fitted around the natural forms.

The resulting works reflect Park’s interest in the inherent qualities and histories of materials. No two stones are alike; each carries evidence of processes that predate the work itself, placing geological time alongside the precision of contemporary fabrication.
