- Step into the shoes of an intrepid explorer with 'A Modern Pilgrim in Mecca' (1912) by Arthur John Byng Wavell — a rare and daring account of a secret journey into the heart of Islam’s holiest city.
At a time when non-Muslims were strictly forbidden from entering Mecca, Wavell undertook the perilous pilgrimage in disguise, risking his life to document the sacred rituals, vibrant culture, and spiritual devotion of early 20th-century Arabia.
His observations offer a rare glimpse into a world unseen by most Westerners, making this book a historical treasure for collectors and travel enthusiasts alike.
A gripping blend of adventure, cultural exploration, and forbidden history, Wavell’s journey stands as a testament to the courage and curiosity of early explorers.

In honour of the spookiest of seasons, our junior specialist Hannah Lessiter looks at a leaf from 'The Nuremberg Chronicle' depicting Imago Mortis (Image of Death) 💀...
It shows five cheerful skeletons and decaying cadavers dancing, playing music, and emerging from a grave. The text below begins ‘morte nihil melius’ (nothing is better than death), emphasising the importance of the Memento Mori (remember that you must die) message offered by the work.
Hartmann SCHEDEL. Liber Chronicarum. [Nuremberg], 1493.
