Keith is real!

We were very happy to see William Morris Gallery's offer for younger visitors featured in Chloe Ashby's piece for The Guardian's culture pages this morning!

Seeing one of the Gallery's invaluable volunteers featured in the piece was particularly pleasing. Keith is indeed real, and has worked for many years as a dedicated volunteer at William Morris Gallery. Visitors are often welcomed by the wonderful Keith Wenden, who frequently provides tours of our permanent collection.

It's National Volunteers Week (1 to 7 June), and we'd like to thank all of the brilliant volunteers who make the work of William Morris Gallery possible every day.

Keith is pictured here at our 75-year anniversary celebrations in 2025.

An elegant glimpse into Liberty & Co. design at the end of the 19th century.

This evening coat, made around 1897, reflects the distinctive style of Liberty’s dress department, established in 1884 under architect-designer Edward William Godwin. Known for flowing form and soft, draped fabric, garments for Liberty & Co featured embroidery worked by skilled women artisans. The silk used in the coat can be traced to a Liberty pattern book from the same period.

From The Devonshire Collection of Period Costume, Falmouth University.

See this coat at Women in Print, open until Sunday 21 June, Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. FREE admission.

+ Myth-busting: Wooden sash windows needn’t go in the skip +

Head to the Gallery's first floor landing from 10am, for advice and demonstrations from heritage conservation carpenter Ross Harris.

He’ll show how old wooden sash windows, often made of high-quality timber, can be repaired, re-corded, re-glazed and preserved and in use for years to come. He’ll talk about the pros and cons of inserting replacement double-glazed panes and the options for secondary glazing and draft proofing as well as specialist adhesives and paints.

10am to 5pm. FREE.

William Morris founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) in 1877, in response to the work of Victorian architects whose enthusiasm for harmful restoration caused irreparable damage. Today the SPAB encourages excellence in new design to enrich and complement the built historic environment.
