PAULA HARO
b. 1970, Mexico City

In her series of fotobordados, Paula Haro breathes new life into her photographic archives by intricately embroidering over images she captured more than two decades ago. This technique, which she describes as a fusion of photography and embroidery, allows her to revisit and reinterpret moments from her past work, adding layers of meaning and emotion. Haro’s journey into photography began in the 1990s, documenting daily life in Mexico City and significant events like the 1994 Zapatista uprising in Chiapas. Her early work focused on capturing the essence of individuals often overlooked by mainstream narratives. Now, through the meticulous process of embroidery, she enhances these images, emphasizing the emotions and stories they convey. Each piece becomes a unique blend of visual and tactile art, inviting viewers to engage with the photographs on a deeper level. Haro’s fotobordados serve as a testament to the enduring power of memory and the transformative potential of art.

PIA ELIZONDO
b. 1963, Mexico City, Mexico

_____

Mexican photographer Pía Elizondo has been residing in France since 2003.

After studying philosophy and having a self-taught approach to photography, she obtained a master’s degree from the École Nationale Supérieure de Photographie (Arles) in 2012.

Since beginning her photographic work in 1993, she has participated in numerous individual and collective exhibitions throughout the world: France, Spain, Mexico, the United States, and South America (Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico).

______

Series Songe d’oublie

In her series Songe d’oubli, Pia captures the essence of memory suspended in a delicate, dreamlike state. Drawing inspiration from Salvador Elizondo’s reflections in Elsinore, her work explores the boundary between the familiar and the unknown as images emerge from obscurity, linger momentarily, and then dissolve into the quiet depths of forgetfulness. Educated at the Liceo Franco Mexicano in Mexico City and the École Nationale Supérieure de Photographie in Arles and self-taught in photography with a philosophical grounding from UNAM, Pia constructs a visual language that mirrors the fragility of recollection. Her photographs embody the tension of images on the edge of memory, inviting viewers to experience a cinematic journey through scenes that hover between presence and absence.

DANIELA PROST

______

b. 1967, Mexico City, Mexico

Daniela Prost’s work blends her Mexican heritage and personal history with philosophical exploration, creating abstract compositions that evoke emotion, sensuality, and resilience. Using media such as charcoal, pigments, and ink, she crafts pieces that oscillate between abstraction and representation, often exploring the dualities of life, desire, and survival. Her work includes not only painting and photography but also multidisciplinary collaborations with dance, music, and technology, creating immersive experiences that reflect her dedication to movement and transformation

______

Le Sacre de la Femme

In her series Le Sacre de la Femme, Daniela delves into themes of femininity, power, and sensuality through a symbolic exploration of the female form. Drawing on an analogy between the fig and women’s erogenous zones, Prost questions the dynamics of female pleasure and consent.
Each image captures an intimate narrative that challenges societal views on female agency, transforming objects and body parts into symbols that embody both vulnerability and strength. Inspired by her Franco-Mexican heritage and a philosophical approach, Prost’s work transcends traditional representation, inviting the viewer to reflect on the boundaries of female autonomy and the sacrality of self. Her compositions hover between abstraction and visceral expression, using light, shadow, and organic materials to evoke a raw, tactile quality. Prost’s art becomes a meditation on the interplay between body and spirit, encouraging the viewer to engage with notions of identity, empowerment, and the complex layers of womanhood.

CARMEN MARISCAL

______

b. 1968, Palo Alto California, USA

Memory, family, fragility and confinement are recurring themes in the works of Carmen Mariscal. Grew up in Mexico and based in Paris since 1999, she expresses these themes in installations, photography, video, sculpture and theatre set designs.

_____

Celosia Filigrana

In the series “Celosia Filigrana,” Carme explores jewellery as an intimate language, transforming adornments into markings or small cages upon the body. The term « Celosia » refers to an architectural feature akin to a jalousie—a screen often used in convents or places in the Orient, allowing nuns to witness the mass without being seen, adding layers of historical and cultural connotation to her work.

The jewellery is crafted using filigrana, a technique of intricate metalwork introduced to Mexico during the colonial period, likely originating from Arab influences in Spain. Carmen’s pieces invite viewers to contemplate the complex intersections of visibility and concealment, tradition, and transformation.

Through “Celosia Filigrana”, Carmen redefines jewellery beyond mere decoration, offering it as a vessel for layered interpretations and an emblem of historical resonance.

MEET THE ARTIST - ALICIA PAZ

_______

B. 1967 in Mexico City, Mexico

Alicia Paz is a painter and sculptor based in London who studied MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2008 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London, in 2000.

Born and raised in Mexico before living in the US, France, and now the UK, Alicia’s work is informed by her personal experience and reflects transcultural representation and identity, particularly that of women. Through her paintings and sculptures, she explores cultural hybrids, representations of family, and the complexities of kinship and lineage in a globalized world. Her work often incorporates elements from the applied and decorative arts to interweave narratives and explore notions of displacement and identity. Ornamentation, illusion, and materiality are strongly featured in her work.

_________

Labyrinth of Images

Hosted by a residency at S1 Artspace in Sheffield in 2022, Alicia Paz researched the historic collections of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire to inspire a new body of work using the technique of photograms and print. During a subsequent residency at the Centre for Print Research at UWE in Bristol, Alicia explored translating these photographic images into printed fabrics and other supports to be displayed as wall-based works or on a folding screen structure. She aims to create a labyrinth of interrelated images as a rich dialogue between painting, photography, print, and sculpture. Alicia also produced a gilded three-dimensional edition in resin, reflecting on costume and attire, inspired explicitly by Duchess Georgiana Cavendish’s crystal collection.

2.&4. Untitled 2023, digital print on Habotai silk and silk organza

MEET THE ARTIST - Alexa Torre

In the series “Rosa Sublime”, Alexa Torre uses her own body as a point of departure to explore the relationship between objects and spaces. Always employing a pink shade as part of her signature, she transforms a specific scenario into her stage. Her body and the image of herself become an active element that gives a different narrative to a found object, and their meaning changes. Often, the viewer can identify many components in her photographs with social, cultural, or historical references and memories. Once these objects are perceived in a specific way, within their context and history, like a prehispanic sculpture, they are seen with a new perspective and become an extended version of the artist. Alexa Torre appropriates objects and scenarios that become a self-portrait, another self.

Alexa Torre confronts the spectator with stereotypes and shared assumptions about what the viewer sees in the object. When her body comes onto the stage with humor, the gaze upon her and the given objects changes.

Torre studies light and color, transforming what seems familiar into something new.
