ARTIST IN FOCUS: TEDDY HANSEN

Teddy Hansen’s paintings are comically surreal works that celebrate the power of escapist art.

During the creative process, Teddy uses his inner child and imagination as a starting point. Each piece fuses real-world imagery, such as animals, architecture, and people, with an originally concocted absurd narrative. Teddy invites audiences to interpret his works at face value; this way, when viewers interact with his paintings, they unravel a story that becomes increasingly complex as it unfolds, provoking instant laughter and leaving them with a lasting joyful impression.

ARTIST IN FOCUS: SIMON DREGDE

Simon Dredge’s work delves into the recording of LGBT history before it’s forgotten. He is a ceramicist based in Liverpool who reflects on his upbringing as a gay teenager in the Worcestershire countryside during the 1980s and uses his experience as a young man looking for belonging as motivation for his work.

Simon’s latest collection is a celebration of the male n**e, masculinity, and how men see each other. The male n**e collection takes inspiration from Simon’s time working at a gay sauna in Dublin during the 1990s. Before dating apps and social media, the sauna operated as a safe space for men to meet and build communities. Simon thinks about the thrill and anticipation of men sharing a subtle glance in the hopes of forming connection.

For Simon, this collection is a tribute to the men who came into the sauna 30 years ago and to the men he knew in the past.

ARTIST IN FOCUS: RAFAEL

Trained at Rome’s Academy of Fine Arts with a background in commercial art, Rafael’s work reflects a journey that began in Italy and continues to evolve in London, with his perspective being shaped by mainstream culture.

Rafael’s work leans into the relatable and the celebrated, using the superficial to tell stories that connect. His new series Flatmates builds on the ideas introduced in his previous body of work, deFlattening, bringing together images from pop culture—such as cartoons—with long-established symbols in high culture.

Presenting these worlds together collapses hierarchies between high and low culture, stripping down constructs built by institutions, critics, and market forces. Juxtaposing these symbols, shared qualities appear: immediacy, recognisability, and cultural persistence. Showing that each operates as part of the same visual culture, revealing how images gain meaning and endure over time.

ARTIST IN FOCUS: JAM WESTWOOD

Jam Westwood’s obsession with ancient ceramics, mythmaking, folklore, and feminism inspired her to use the storytelling process found in these historical artefacts to tell new stories about contemporary social concerns. Her ceramics playfully explore our broad willingness to accept ‘truths’ extracted from archaeological relics without questioning which narratives were biased or fictitious.

Jam’s latest ‘Seven Sisters’ collection, composed of seven amphora vases decorated with illustrations that draw from European folklore and Greek mythology, explores the contemporary political landscape, the manosphere, and today’s female condition. Each was built slowly, in stoneware clay and original story. Archaeologists may one day unearth Jam’s collection. Will a new civilisation view them as fun fantasies or use them as a way to explain humanity in 2026?

ARTIST IN FOCUS: EVELYN ALBROW

Evelyn Albrow’s practice is inspired by contemporary and historical utopias, both spiritual and secular, ranging from Beguinages (founded in the 1200s) to everyday communes like the Maison de Babayagas (set up in 2014 in Paris). Her ceramics explore stories in matriarchal utopias, with each piece showing a dreamy world inhabited by monsters, matrons, saints, and goddesses meeting on celestial planes.

Evelyn’s ceramics are decorated with illustrations in her unique style, painted in underglaze, giving her work an ethereal effect. A viewer engages with Evelyn’s ceramics by carefully deciphering the vast amount of detail and historical references.

ARTIST IN FOCUS: AOIBHÍN MAGUIRE

Aoibhín’s work is an emotional response to her experiences and observations, using nature as a conduit. Her style leans toward maximalism, using various layers of paint to create immersive compositions full of colour.

Aoibhín’s semi-abstract spaces are an expression of raw emotions. A racing mind from life’s chaos is interpreted as dynamic lines painted in thick layers across a canvas that, as a whole, create a landscape where every shape/piece has a purpose. A narrative of transformation arises in this process; uncertainty is reconfigured into a moment of clarity.

Similar to when one sees the harmonious veins on a leaf or how petals on a flower round perfectly next to each other, Aoibhín’s paintings give viewers a sense of natural calm and the feeling that meaning can arise from the craziness of life.

ARTIST IN FOCUS: ANNE ATHENA

Anne Athena’s practice comes from her profound interest in human behaviour, spirituality, and psychology; delving into the stories of people’s lives and histories passed down. Her studies materialise in her ceramics and paintings, creating finely painted surrealistic worlds full of symbolism to tell hidden stories about the human experience.

Anne’s work at first glance looks simply magical, out of this world, but paying attention to the meticulously placed details, you’ll find a deep exploration into what people desire, how they reason, and what they are afraid of.

Anne’s latest project, titled “The Hero’s Journey,” will involve her creating a tarot deck consisting of 78 cards, with each card being a different painting representing a theme or challenge she faced during her personal journey.
