Most people don’t come back to photography after 25 years.

London Photo Show this June at Hoxton Arches will include work from Jim Diamond, someone who did exactly that.

He started shooting combat sports in the 80s.
Boxing at places like Royal Albert Hall, karate across Europe.

Then, a legal career took over and photography went on hold.

Years later, he came back to it and picked up exactly where he left off.

His work spans decades of combat sport:
– shot on film in the 80s
– shot digitally in recent years
– the same instinct running through all of it

Jim is not just documenting sport, but seeing it differently.

Treating it as something closer to art.

You’ll see that progression in his work at the show.

True or false? Why?

Does having a camera create a separation between you and the world which empowers you to observe it?

Or, does pointing the camera make you feel like you are intruding?

On Photo Faction over the weekend we had the prompt ‘Not In Use’. Our photographers were asked to take photos of spaces, places and objects that were not in use, either temporarily or permanently.

A brilliant array of images were produced. It’s always inspiring to see the very different creative outputs.

We will do one more prompt this week as part of the free January project. Then start the project working towards the exhibition from next week. Links in bio if you would like to join in.

Most improvement in photography doesn’t come from new gear or paying too much attention to influencers.

It comes from looking at photos you don’t fully understand yet, shooting regularly without a clear outcome, and sticking with projects long enough to get bored - then pushing past that.

Improvement isn’t reach or followers. It’s repetition, attention, and time spent doing photography.

Three unique and very different responses to our Threshold Prompt over the weekend.

It’s always so enjoyable to see how differently people interpret a word through photography.

Here we have threshold shown as:
- Travelling from one place to another
- Being stuck behind a fence
- Changing from knowing to not knowing

Think you have something to add? The prompt is still open, join the January project, link in bio.

Take your camera everywhere (you already probably do).

Give yourself small constraints so you’re not overthinking it - e.g. frames, lines, shadows, texture, people

Photograph what you’re already around, what you’re part of.

Most of it is just practice for the shot you don’t want to miss.

Three more responses to the Condensation prompt - we’ve really enjoyed seeing these.

They show careful consideration of what’s there and make the ordinary look more beautiful.

Three submissions in for our first prompt in our January Mini Project on Photo Faction. The prompt was ‘Condensation’ and they’re all quietly strong photos.

Condensation is a good filter for creative photography. Windows, mirrors, cold bottles, bus shelters, light at night.

This is a good prompt to join. Check out the January project link in bio.

Shot through a steamed-up window for the Beat the January Blues mini project on

The brief was: Photograph what moisture reveals or obscures - wiped arcs, partial clarity, cold breath, misty windows.

If you want a simple reason to take photos this January, the mini project is free — link in bio.

Photography isn’t always about finding an exciting subject.

It’s about noticing shape and form in ordinary things, and how they sit together.

From there, it’s just a question of whether a frame makes sense when you put it together and decide what to include, and what to exclude.
