Jewellery as Art : how to wear your Calder Jewels ?

When the greatest walking art piece wears Calder - the whole world looks. Wonderful images of the legend .

Slides that follow show a performance piece as a dance we commissioned for a huge party at The Natural History Museum.

Calder always wanted his jewellery (and mobiles ) to move. He described them as dull and lifeless before being worn (suspended )

Embroidered jewellery by the amazing Egyptian designer . These pieces are made in gilded brass to keep the costs down. The craftsmanship is exquisite and why wouldn’t you want to wear a beautiful sunset?

In the gallery we have work by independent Jewellery designers and show their unique pieces. We also have vintage treasures and jewellery by great painters and sculptors - artist’s jewellery. So if you love interesting jewellery have a look through the rest of our posts and get in touch. Or forward this to a friend who might be interested.

Thank you for your support.

Alexander Calder was never trained as a jeweller — Each piece was made by hand, usually as a gift for friends or family, and never as part of a commercial edition. In total, he made around 1,800 unique works of jewellery.
We are proud to be among the principal dealers of Calder jewellery (and other artists too), handling only pieces that have been rigorously authenticated by the Calder Foundation and issued with their official registration number confirming authenticity.
Calder’s jewellery is immediately recognisable as his work from both the hammer marks and also the style which is very similar to his sculpture.

NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE ✨🫶

A French-American sculptor, writer, stage designer, and filmmaker. Surreal, playful, and imaginative, her work included reliefs and sculptures made of plastic toys, monsters, altars, and her iconic Nanas - larger-than-life female figures bursting with colour and joy. Beginning in 1964, the Nanas celebrated femininity and festivity through exuberant forms and brightly enameled surfaces.

We were proud to present the only Niki jewellery selling show ever in our London gallery in 2019. We have quite a few pieces. Please get in touch if you are interested.

Claude Lalanne believed art should grow like nature itself. 🌿

This silver Papillon Bracelet (1980) captures that philosophy perfectly - a butterfly in mid-flight, resting lightly on the wrist. In the heart of winter, it feels like a quiet wish for spring: a reminder that nature is always present, even when it’s waiting beneath the surface. Part sculpture, part jewel, Lalanne’s work transforms the natural world into something intimate, poetic, and alive.

We have a wide selection jewellery by Claude Lalanne available for sale. DM or email for enquiries.

Jewellery from the collection - Focus on Fontana!

Lucio Fontana was a leading figure in 20th-century modern art and the founder of Spatialism, a canvas to explore space. His most well-known works include Cuts series, made by slashing the canvas with a knife and the Holes series, created by puncturing.

In 1967, Fontana extended his ideas of Spatialise into jewellery. Through a collaboration with the Italian goldsmith GianCarlo Montabello, he translated his artistic language of cuts and hoes into metal. Just as he explored space by cutting the canvas, his jewellery used metal to express the same ideas.

What better way to begin the year than with Man Ray.

After moving to Paris in 1921, Man Ray quickly became an established figure of the avant-garde scene. He pioneered a number of photographic techniques, including the rayogram and solarisation, and was responsible for some of the most iconic images of the twentieth century.

The women in Man Ray’s life, along with his broader reverence for the female form, were reflected in his jewellery designs. Always mindful of the wearer, his pieces were never impractical or obtrusive. Instead, they played with illusion, language, and form, offering a continuation of the artistic preoccupations that defined his wider practice.

As we close the gallery for this year, it feels like the right moment to reflect on what a lively and rewarding year it has been - full of exhibitions, conversations, travel and exchange! A welcome reminder of how energising it is to be part of such a curious and engaged international jewellery community!

Full of memorable exhibitions ✨ From Force of Nature and Surrealist Jewels 101, to the festive close of Things That I Love: Now. Alongside supporting emerging talent with awards at the goldsmiths fair, we are so incredibly grateful for the creativity that has filled our space and want to extend thanks to all our followers, friends, artists, collectors and collaborators.

Seasons greetings! We wish everyone a joyful and restful break!

Alice Biolo 💫
Alice is winner of the Louisa Guinness gallery prize of week two, and she was awarded for her magnificent hide ring.
Louisa was attracted to Alice’s innovative approach to movement and also her stone-setting - in her axis pieces, the stone is not rigidly fixed but moves freely, introducing a sense of play.
Alice’s jewellery practice is bold and dramatic. Through symbolism, mixed materials, and carefully considered structures, her work reveals hidden layers and creates pieces of distinctive character. Kinetic elements are central to her practice, inviting interaction and engagement from the wearer.

We are honoured to present Alice Biolo’s work in the gallery as part of our exhibition Things That I Love: Now, celebrating the voice of this talented emerging artist!
