What a day!!! 😱 Thank you to all the amazing people who came to the Leicestershire Archaeological & Historical Society LAHS 2023 HISTORY FAIR Beaumanor Hall!!! 🥰 You’re all awesome! Special thanks to ArchaeologyUK’s Neil Redfern for opening the fair and being part of our panel debate; all our fantastic speakers - Jo Mungovin, Mathew Morris, Susan Barton, Grahame Appleby (and those not on FB), the Awesome LAHS committee support- especially Wendy Scott, Matt Beamish, Liz Tingle and Brandon Fathy; the fantastic re-enactors and living history folks, including Historic Echoes, Vikings of Middle England Raid Hinckley, Chevaliers du Leon, UP AN' AT 'EM! Today’s the day folks! The magnificent LAHS History Fair returns! It’s free for all and speakers, re-enactors and historians from across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and beyond are already making their way to the beautiful Beaumanor Hall! Remember, once you’ve had your fill of history, the Hall’s cafe will be serving hot and cold food and drinks through the day to recharge your batteries! Can’t wait to see you there! With this year’s LAHS History Fair just a matter of hours away, we really hope that you can join us for a fun, FREE and fascinating day at Beaumanor Hall on Saturday. Of course, we are aware that not everybody will be able to attend and so we have decided to also live-stream two of the live talks for a wider audience to enjoy as well (resource capacities sadly meant that we couldn’t stream all talks). The two talks available are:

11:45-12:30 Leicester Cathedral Revealed: Unearthing Secrets at St. Martins, with Mathew Morris (ULAS). Discover the latest news from this fascinating excavation, including info on the Roman alter stone.

12:45 - 13:30 Are You Not Entertained!?: With recent controversy around TV shows like ’The Crown’, films like ’The Lost King’ and other dramatic re-tellings of historic events, a panel of experts discusses historical ‘fact’ Vs fiction in adaptations and ponder where, if anywhere, it is ok to ‘fudge’ the truth for narrative effect. With Prof. Deborah Cartmell, (Centre for Adaptation, DMU), Neil Redfern (Council for British Archaeology), Grahame Appleby (Archaeologist and Re-enactor), Joanne Mungovin (Author and Historian).

Dear all, given the sad and unique historical circumstances surrounding the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, our fun celebration of Leicestershire and Rutland's heritage feels out of keeping with the national period of mourning. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to postpone this Sunday's History Fair at Beaumanor Hall.

We are, however, actively in talks with Beaumanor to secure a new date for the Fair in the Spring of 2023 and so please watch this space for details as they become available.
