🔔 A new bell completes the ring at All Saints Parish Church, Elton, Cambridgeshire! 🔔

The tower at All Saints, Elton is home to a fascinating collection of five bells, weighing 14 cwt in total. Cast by three different founders between 1631 and 1896, they have hung in a six-bell cast iron frame made by Mears & Stainbank in 1936 — with one vacant space waiting to be filled.

And now it has been!

We cast a new treble bell on 18 June, before tuning and polishing it and fitting it with its new headstock. New fittings were also manufactured ready for installation.

Once everything was prepared, the bell was dispatched to Elton and the final stage began — hanging the new treble in the vacant pit of the existing frame.

And with that, the ring is now complete: six bells where once there were five. 🔔

From mould to metal, tuning to installation, it’s been a great project to see through to completion.

Another Taylor’s bell now has a new home at All Saints Parish Church! ❤️🔔

👻 Taylor’s Bellfoundry After Dark...

For one night only, Haunted Heritage will take over Taylor’s Bellfoundry for a special paranormal investigation on Thursday 27 November.

With more than 160 years of history within our walls, the Bellfoundry provides a fascinating backdrop for an evening of exploration after dark. Join experienced investigators as they guide you behind the scenes, using paranormal detection equipment and carrying out a range of experiments throughout the night.

From the foundry floor to hidden corners of the site, you'll have the chance to investigate reported activity, uncover stories from the past and experience the Bellfoundry in a way few people ever do.

The event starts at 8pm on 27 November. 🔔👻

Inside the foundry, the 12 bells for Manchester Cathedral are temporarily hung in their new bell frame - and this is how they sound 🔔

There’s still quite a bit to do before they make their journey to Manchester.

The automatic chiming hammers will be fitted first, then the frame will be carefully dismantled. The steelwork will be sent for galvanising, while the cast-iron components are painted, before everything is prepared for installation.

A fascinating stage in the journey of these bells.

A fascinating piece about Giridhar Vadukar, John Taylor & Co’s Chief Bell Tuner, who has spent 47 years giving bells their voice – 30 of them at Taylor’s in Loughborough.

Giridhar is one of only three people left in the country with this highly specialised skill. It’s a remarkable craft, requiring an extraordinary ear and years of experience – and one that is increasingly difficult to pass on to the next generation.

A really interesting insight into a craft that very few people outside the bellfounding world ever get to see – and Giridhar is just one of the many talented people who make this such a special place.

Giridhar Vadukar is the chief tuner at John Taylor & Co in Loughborough, the last major bell foundry in Britain, and one of only three bell tuners left in the country. Forty-seven years tuning each bell's five notes by hand.

🔔 LITTLE BROMLEY, ESSEX

St Mary’s Church at Little Bromley is a fascinating Grade II* listed building, dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries. Since being declared redundant in 1988, it has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Inside the tower are four bells with a remarkable history. The two oldest were cast in London by Robert Burford in 1392 and 1418 – meaning they have been ringing for more than 600 years. The two smaller bells were cast in 1898 by Henry Bowell of Ipswich.

The Friends of Little Bromley Church have been working hard since 2024 to raise funds for the restoration and rehanging of the bells.

And now the work has begun. 🔔

At the end of August, all four bells were carefully removed from the tower and brought to Loughborough for conservation, limited retuning of the two newer bells, and new ringing fittings.

While the bells are away, their remarkable 1499 bellframe will also be repaired and strengthened, ready for the bells to be rehung.

It’s a wonderful piece of our bell-ringing heritage – and we’re very pleased to be playing a part in giving these historic bells many more years of life. 🔔
