303 Projects Contemporary Art Gallery is delighted to present Double Take, an exhibition of selected work from the archive of renowned British ceramicist Colin Saunders (b. 1938 - 2023).

An education and career that began at Lowestoft School of Art, before moving on to London at the Central School of Art, by 1958 Colin Saunders had joined its ceramics department under the traditionalist leadership of Gilbert Harding-Green. However, it was the radical influence of visiting lecturer William Turnbull—an advocate of American Abstract Expressionism and the spare elegance of Brancusi—that left a lasting mark on the young artist. A refusal to conform to expectations then led to the Central School asking Saunders to leave. The dramatic shock became a defining moment, prompting Saunders to pursue a highly personal and inventive path and practice in ceramics that long stood apart for its sculptural clarity, conceptual discipline, and commitment to form over ornament.

Internationally recognised, Saunders taught at Stoke on Trent College of Art, Morley College, London Institute, and Camberwell College of Art, before setting up his studio in Suffolk in the 1980s, and becoming a member of the Anglian Potters

His work is to be found in the Public Collections at both the British Council and Craft Council

The exhibition at 303 Projects offers a welcome reconnect for Saunders and his work with Lowestoft, where it all began as a young artist. The show presents an opportunity for a new and broadening local audience to encounter and engage with work from his celebrated career that mixes high end craft, beauty and finish with humour, subversion and decadence.

Absolutely delighted to present Michelle Williams Gamaker 'The Ascent' opening Saturday 13th July, 4-7pm.

Exhibition runs 13th July - 3rd August.

Michelle Williams Gamaker .williams.gamaker is an artist filmmaker. Since 2014, she has been developing Fictional Activism: the restoration of marginalised film stars of colour as central figures, who return in her works as brown protagonists to challenge the fictional injustices to which they have been historically consigned. By proposing critical alternatives to imperialist storytelling in British and Hollywood Studio films, she interrogates cinema by sabotaging the casting process and utilising cinema’s tools against itself. Williams Gamaker is joint winner of Film London’s Jarman Award (2020) and exhibits her films nationally and internationally, including BFI London Film Festivals 2018, 2021, Aesthetica Short Film Festival (winner of Best Experimental Film, 2021 and 2023) and Sharjah Film Platform 6 (2023).

Williams Gamaker’s major institutional solo, Our Mountains are Painted on Glass premiered Thieves, her first film in Fictional Revenge at South London Gallery. The exhibition toured to Dundee Contemporary Arts and Bluecoat, Liverpool in 2024.

She is a Reader in BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and is currently a British Academy Wolfson Fellow, where she is developing her filmmaking as Critical Affection.

‘All the strange things’

"Trying to make sense of a seemingly absurd existence, my work questions and proposes a different view – where the surreal and strange and ‘other’ are honoured and elevated.

I cross boundaries into literature, poetry, sound, all of which inform my images. I also plough my own experiences of life - my background, my present, struggles, love, pain, illusions. My experience is also a shared experience. The images I create have a familiarity, something recognised with which the viewer can find a way in. I use repetitions and rhythms, patterns, symbols, syncopation. I work over the images with line and marks and I erase and rebuild to create something that is not still, but is restlessly poised precariously to topple, move, fly away, or explode. The images I create are not going quietly - I obliterate and glorify with colour.

The black background I work on acts as a veil into the unknown. It hints at night and space, a beyond, somewhere else, a darkness we all negotiate as nobody really knows what this is, this life.

I am reproposing what is accepted as stable and ‘normal’ and I am saying “I’m not that, nobody is” and instead I am saying all we ever have is all the strange things that we try to make sense of and which present a wonderful possibility of difference."

is a Sculptor and Senior Lecturer in BA (Hons) Fine Art (Sculpture) and graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, with a BA (Hons) Fine Art (Sculpture) an MFA in Sculpture, and more recently a PhD in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art. He is interested in how the traditions and currency of sculpture can be expanded, interrogated and re-imagined through material-led enquiry.
