Have you been in to see our newest exhibition yet? 🧐
Threads of Passage – Journeys in Fibre and Time, explores and looks at the journeys of everyday objects. The details we miss, the places they’ve been, all captured through the lens of internationally exhibited artist Rhea Banker. 📸
Rhea first came to Mallaig while travelling through the Highlands and Islands and was immediately drawn to the textures and atmosphere of our working harbour. Through striking abstract photography, she takes the everyday sights of Mallaig - weathered ropes, boats, timbers and coastal surfaces - and invites us to see them differently.
Rhea’s own journey has travelled quite some distance too!
After spending 30 years in New York City, she is now based in north-western Massachusetts, with her work exhibited internationally across Scotland, Greenland and Denmark. Mallaig, however, continues to bring her back, and she remains a regular visitor to the area. She says she loves the people, the culture and the scenery - we can’t blame her!
At its heart, Threads of Passage is about much more than ropes and boats. It’s about the marks that people and places leave behind - and the connection between the sea, landscape and communities that have shaped Scotland’s west coast for generations.
We think it’s rather special to see somewhere so familiar through somebody else’s eyes. 💙
The exhibition is now open at Mallaig Heritage Centre, so whether you’re local, visiting Mallaig for the day, stepping off the train or passing through on your travels, come in and have a look for yourself.
