The 1920’s often denotes the streamlined modernity of art deco and boyish silhouettes, but couturiers also took inspiration from rococo colour palettes and natural motifs.

This can be seen in the 1920’s robe de style which echos the shape of 18th century wide panniers.

To find out more about how the idyllic imagery of the 18th century has long been a source of escapism from modernity, visit our current display Romancing the 18th Century: Rococo to Stage.

WORKSHOP: Chicken Scratch Embroidery

Wendy will teach you how to create beautiful designs with Chicken scratch embroidery.

Chicken scratch embroidery is a great for any level of embroider skill. This style of embroidery is done on gingham fabric and gets it name from its fine and spiky style.

Welcome to the world of beauty and cosmetics in the age of Jane Austen✨

With the new take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility it got us thinking…

Whilst we have seen small snippets from the trailer, it’s hard to get a complete picture of how accurate to the time this version will be.

So before we all flock to the cinema, let’s make sure we know what we are looking for in beauty in the time of Jane Austen.

Author Sarah Jane Downing will be shedding light on exactly that in her talk at the museum on 22nd August.

TALK: Beauty and Cosmetics in the Time of Jane Austen✨

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of good looks must be in want of ways to enhance her beauty...

This beautifully illustrated talk will reveal the secrets that every Regency heroine should know about being beautiful, from her glossy ringlets to her well-turned toes.

Taking the span of Jane Austen’s life (1775- 1817) Sarah Jane Downing author of Beauty and Cosmetics in the Time of Jane Austen and Beauty and Cosmetics 1550-1950 will explore the trends and changes in philosophy, literature, and art that transformed the concept of beauty from the pretty, powdered, porcelain doll of the Georgian court to the healthy, fresh complexion of Elizabeth Bennet.

There’s still time to come and see our temporary display ‘Romancing the 18th Century: Rococo to Stage’✨

For over 200 years the 18th century has been immortalised by artists, fashion designers and the stage, often portraying a romanticised fantasy of the era.

From pastoral fantasies to the rise of pantomime, idyllic imagery of this time period has been used as a form of escapism from modernity from the 18th century itself until the present day.

The Museum of Fashion Malvern gives thanks to Malvern Theatre Players for making this display possible through their costume loans and support.

Free entry. Available to view until October 2026.

This is the final week to vote for us in the Great Malvern Waitrose Community Matters green token scheme 💚

We really appreciate everyone’s votes so far!

All tokens go towards helping support our essential running costs as a non-profit community interest company, whilst helping us care for and preserve our collection.

Currently free to the public, we aim to provide an educational, accessible space for all.

WORKSHOP: Kumihimo Braiding

During this session Wendy will take you through the an ancient Japanese braiding technique using a specialized slotted disc called Kumihimo.

This type of braiding can then be made into a variety of items such as necklaces, coasters and more. Come away with your own wooden Kumihimo disk to continue crafting with braids.
