Here's an interesting image of Malvern as seen and painted in the late 1700s.

It's pre Foley Hotel and library but hotels and boarding houses dominate Belle Vue Terrace and a number of cottages are scattered above and to the south of the Priory, with its flourishing orchard.

A gallery sent this to us several years ago to see if we might know the artist, but no further details emerged.

Let us know if you can help solve the mystery!

In the meantime, a Happy Christmas and a healthy, prosperous New Year from all at the Malvern Museum of Local History.

Faith Renger recently came across this wonderful postcard, dated June 8th, 1911, and sent to Sophie from A Hill. The sender was arranging to meet Sophie on the Golf Common (known today as Peachfield Common) from 2 to 2.30 on Saturday.

Sophie lived in Pendock and the invitation begs the questions, did she make it? Was this a relative or a young man, and even what was the weather like?!

The sender clearly had a sense of humour when choosing this jolly postcard to send!

Another picture by James Charles Oldmeadow, from the Museum archives.

This is one of the 'Abbey Gateway' (aka Priory Gatehouse, since Malvern's monastery was always a priory, never an abbey).

The lower right-hand window of the gatehouse has a large beam hanging across it from which were hung pheasants, rabbits and sausages that were sold to the public by Mrs Clay. She and her daughter Mary ran a grocery business in the downstairs room too.

The building on the left which now houses First Paige printers' business, was then in use as the stables for horses belonging to guests at the Crown Hotel on Belle Vue Terrace. This hotel operated on the site now occupied by Lloyds Bank and was leased to the water cure doctors in 1842 where they first launched their quirky water treatments.

Visit the museum for more insights into Victorian Malvern.

But hurry, we close our doors on 1st November!

Here is one of the newly digitised images taken of one of our prints from the museum's collection. It is by the well-known Victorian artist, James Charles Oldmeadow who died in 1875, having immortalised many iconic scenes from the Malvern area in his pen and ink drawings.

The Wyche Cutting was enlarged in Victorian times to allow for the increased wheeled traffic and the frequent donkeys probably descending from Worcestershire Beacon. Road workings in 1857 in this area uncovered a hoard of over 300 iron currency bars dating back to the time the Romans arrived in the area in the mid - 40s AD. It was a well known spot for revealing fossils from much earlier times too. The gap in the hills at this point had been put to good use in prehistoric times by the salt traders from Droitwich bringing their loads over the hills to sell in south Wales.
