Ever wondered how you clean a big whale skeleton when it’s suspended high in a big museum gallery?

Neither had I, but it’s with a feather duster on a long stick apparently. 🧹

Harmony, our s***m whale, gets dusted and vacuumed every year. You’d be dusty too if you hadn’t moved since 1896 🐳

✨🎮✨ What happens when gaming meets decolonisation?

Join Critical Conversations at Manchester Museum for a special session exploring Relooted, an Afrofuturist heist game that asks: Is it stealing to take back what was stolen?

Through gameplay and discussion, this event opens up conversations around repatriation, colonial histories, justice and the future of museums. Expect thoughtful debate, connection and community in a space designed for young people to question, reflect and imagine differently.

Meet Harmony 🐋✨

After receiving more than 2,000 name suggestions from visitors, Manchester Museum’s iconic s***m whale finally has a name!

The winning idea came from nine year old Radha, who chose Harmony because whales are giants of the ocean, but are also social animals who care for and love their calves.

Children from Class 3A at Heald Place Primary School in Rusholme were invited to meet Harmony during a special visit to the Museum, where they shared their thoughts on why the world needs more harmony right now 💙

Harmony has watched over our Living Worlds Gallery for 130 years, after becoming stranded on the coast of Massachusetts in 1896.

In 2014, Sir David Attenborough visited Manchester Museum to film in our Vivarium for the BBC’s Natural World series, shining a light on endangered amphibians and conservation work happening right here in Manchester.

During his trip, David was given an origami Darwin’s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii), which is one of his favourite critically endangered frogs.

As he celebrates his 100th birthday today, we’re looking back at this unforgettable visit with great affection.

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David, and thank you for inspiring generations to care for the natural world 🌍💚
