Manchester Jewish Museum

Manchester Jewish Museum We are place to experience how we are different, together 🫱🏼‍🫲🏿 Manchester Jewish Museum is a place to experience how we are different, together.

Our museum first opened in 1984, housed in a Grade II* listed 1874 (former) Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Cheetham Hill, one of the most diverse areas in Manchester. Following a £6m redevelopment and extension our new museum includes a new gallery, vegetarian café, shop and learning studio & kitchen as well as complete restoration of our synagogue. We hold over 31,000 items in our collection

, documenting the story of Jewish migration and settlement in Manchester. The collection is considered by historians to be of national and international significance and our synagogue has been described by Historic England as “one of the highlights of Victorian Gothic architecture in the country”. We connect Jewish stories to the world and to our society to explore both our differences and similarities and celebrate that which makes people unique and that which connects us all. In doing so we look to spark reaction and change and to make real the knowledge that there is more that binds us together than separates us. We boldly explore and combine educational, cultural and artistic experiences to encourage those with whom we come into contact to feel and believe that we are all better together. We make connections to make things better.

On sunny days like we have been having recently, we all appreciate our green spaces. But in urban areas like Manchester, this was not always accessible for every child. ☀️

The Delamere Forest School, in Cheshire, also known as “The Jewish Fresh Air Home and School for Delicate Manchester and Salford Children”, was opened in 1921 for this reason; so that children living in urban areas of Manchester could live and learn in the countryside. 🌿

In the 1920s, there was great concern for the health of children in urban slums, specifically in Jewish communities. 🏭

Founded by Margaret Langdon and largely community funded by middle class philanthropists, the school sought to improve the physical and mental health of the Jewish youth. 🌳The lack of access to parks and green spaces in the city was seen as the primary issue, so many of the activities at the school prioritised time outside.

Lessons were regularly taken outside, with easily portable desks. A general maxim of “learning by doing” was encouraged and
students were also taught gardening, poultry care and local geography. Long rest periods and time for play were also prioritised to reduce mental strain for the students. 🦆

The school was closed in 2011. However, the body that ran the school, renamed Delamere Charitable Trust, continues to provide service to children with special needs in Manchester.

To learn more about our local history, book your visit to the museum. And if you have any stories or memories related to Delamere, we’d love to hear them in the comments!

Our new dining event is only a week away, and we can’t wait to welcome you! 🫒

On Thursday, June 4th, as part of Jewish Culture Month, we invite you to join us for The Table: Around the Museum, a truly unique evening where food, stories, and history come together in one unforgettable experience. 🍐

You will be guided through the museum and enjoy a seven-course vegetarian tasting menu, with each dish inspired by the people, communities, and moments that have shaped our building and collection over time. As you move through the space, you’ll discover how our stories unfold in unexpected and delicious ways. 🫜🍷

This is more than a dining experience. It’s a chance to explore the museum in a completely new light, to taste history, hear voices from the past, and connect with the rich cultural threads that run through Manchester’s Jewish heritage.

With just one week to go, we’re so excited to share this immersive journey with you.
