Manchester Art Gallery

Manchester Art Gallery is one of the country’s finest art museums. We mix works from our wonderful historic collections with the best international contemporary art to bring fresh perspectives to familiar images, create visual dialogues and encourage conversation and debate. We welcome over half a million visitors each year to our home in the heart of the city, a blend of h

istoric and contemporary architecture that echoes our innovative artistic programme. Through our exhibitions and events, we offer extraordinary encounters with brilliant art. Explore our collections of fine art, spanning six centuries and including many major modern and contemporary pieces. We are famous for 19th century British paintings, particularly our outstanding collection of Pre-Raphaelite works. Our decorative arts collections showcase the artistry, tastes and techniques of every era and culture, from ancient civilizations to today’s designer makers. Our collections of ceramics, silver, glass, furniture and costume are especially fine. We constantly renew and update our collections displays so you should discover something new every time you visit.

Why were the Pre-Raphaelites so obsessed with red hair? 👩‍🦰 🧑‍🦰

On World Redhead Day, join Louise for a fun, themed tour of the Manchester Art Gallery collection centred around the history of hair colour in art.

Many artists, particularly the Pre-Raphaelites, were drawn to redheaded muses. For some, fiery locks symbolised desire and power. Others used copper tones as a warning for caution.

Each of the chosen artworks will be brought to life with engaging interpretation and fascinating historical context. Don’t miss this chance to learn more about hair history.

Planning a visit to Things of the Least? Please note that we’ll be using the exhibition for a special baby research session on Fridays 8, 15, 22 May and 5 June, so the space will be closed for between 10 – 10.45 am.
These sessions help us learn more about how babies explore, play and feel the gallery spaces.
The exhibition reopens at 10.45am and we’d love to welcome you back then.

You can find out more about the exhibition, its opening time and the programme of events related on the gallery website.
