The Summerhouse Gallery aims to provide a welcoming environment that shows the very best of Cornish/South West artists.

Located in the ancient charter town of Marazion and simply a stone's throw away from the sea lies The Summerhouse Gallery. The Summerhouse Gallery is a beautiful space that shows a wide variety of paintings, bespoke jewellery, ceramics and glass. The aim is to provide a welcoming environment that shows the very best of Cornish/South West linked artists. Whilst a visitor may recognise established work by painters such as Michael Strang, Mike Hindle, John Piper and Michael Praed; there is also the opportunity to discover new, rising talents - Kate Richardson and Imogen Bone to name just two. The Summerhouse endeavours to have a selection of work on show that cannot be found anywhere else. Since opening in June 2011, The Summerhouse Gallery has received nothing but praise from the press and public alike. Cornwall Today said: ‘In just a few months, The Summerhouse has established itself as one of the best galleries in West Cornwall’ whilst ‘this is cornwall’ described the ‘Winter Light’ exhibition as ‘the perfect antidote to the winter blues’. The future is bright for The Summerhouse Gallery. Whether you are local to the area or a visitor, an art enthusiast or simply a person with a small interest in artwork; one thing is sure. The Summerhouse Gallery will be delighted to welcome you to the gallery and hope that you enjoy discovering the wonderful work on show.

New work from Alex Yarlett

With the vivid pink and purple skies we’ve been treated to in Cornwall recently, Alex Yarlett’s latest collection couldn’t have arrived at a more fitting time.

Alex’s semi-abstracted landscape paintings are full of movement and atmosphere, with wide, expressive brushstrokes and a playful palette of inky blues, rosy neutrals, vivid turquoise and coral pinks.

Capturing the shifting light across the landscape, there’s something wonderfully dreamlike about these original paintings, familiar places transformed through colour, texture and Alex’s distinctive way of seeing.

For anyone looking to bring colour into an interior, Alex’s work makes a beautiful focal point. The combination of dark blues with unexpected pinks, corals and turquoise gives these contemporary landscapes a wonderful presence within both colourful and more neutral spaces.

Places I Remember, a solo show by Sophie Velzian

We are delighted to share a teaser of what’s to come, with the opening of this beautiful show just around the corner.

In this collection, Sophie explores places of personal significance, drawing on both plein air studies and memories of walks, landscapes and experiences. Working across a range of media, from oils and acrylics to pastels, she captures not only the character of each place, but the atmosphere and emotions they evoke.

Alongside more recognisable landscapes, Sophie’s love of colour and paint has also led her towards more abstract explorations of place, where light, weather and atmosphere become the focus. Together, the works capture the way a place can stay with us long after we have left it.

A Date for Your Diaries

Places I Remember- a solo show by Sophie Velzian.

Opening Friday 9th October, with a private view from 5–7pm.

In this beautifully atmospheric and evocative new collection, Sophie draws on memories of the places that have played a poignant part in shaping both her life and her practice as an artist.

From the quiet banks of the River Helford to the wild, dramatic landscapes of Scotland, Places I Remember takes us on a journey through places held close, capturing not only the landscapes themselves, but the feeling and memory of being there.

We are so looking forward to sharing this very special collection with you.

Rhiannon Cottam’s Penzance

This body of work is a celebration of Penzance through Rhiannon’s eyes, a town she has known all her life, filled with familiar places, memories and the little details that so often find their way into her paintings.

From the tropical planting of Morrab Gardens and the comings and goings of the harbour, to colourful shopfronts, decorative buildings and glimpses through windows, the collection focuses on the everyday character of Penzance. The slightly wonky, colourful and often overlooked details that make a place feel like itself.

Creating the collection encouraged Rhiannon to look again at somewhere so familiar, finding new compositions in streets and corners she has walked past hundreds of times, while revisiting the memories attached to them.

PZ is also the first time Rhiannon has exhibited alongside her mother, Jo Cottam. Starting with the same town and many of the same shared memories, the two collections show two very different interpretations of a place that has played an important part in their family life.

Jo Cottam’s Penzance

Here is the full collection of work by Jo Cottam for our current exhibition, PZ.

Penzance has been a part of Jo’s life for more than 50 years, from childhood days spent racing to the fountain in Morrab Gardens and exploring the Jubilee Pool, to returning as a teenager, summer jobs in town and evenings spent on Chapel Street. The Scillonian holds plenty of memories too, after Jo and her husband spent some time living on the Isles of Scilly before returning to West Cornwall to raise their family.

For PZ, Jo has painted the parts of Penzance that have stayed with her over the years, its beautiful old buildings, subtropical gardens, harbour, familiar streets and, of course, those wonderful glimpses of the sea.
