Senhouse Roman Museum

Senhouse Roman Museum The Museum celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010. The Museum is housed in the Victorian Naval Reserve Battery.

It is a small museum on the outskirts of the coastal town of Maryport next to the Roman fort where most of the collection is recovered from. A Roman museum on the west coast of Cumbria overlooking the Solway Firth and Scottish coast. The western end of the Hadrian's Wall world heritage site. The majority of the collection has been recovered from the adjacent Roman fort and vicus by the Senhouse fa

mily over the last 400 years and includes the largest collection of Roman military altars from a single site, inscriptions and Romano-British religious sculpture. The museum has an extensive programme of events and activities for visitors of all ages. 2011 sees the first excavation on the Roman site since 1966 when Newcastle University leads and community excavation at the findspot of the 17 altars discovered in 1870 by Humphrey Senhouse followed by our annual Roman Festival (16th July - 29th August).
