If you are visiting Maryport this weekend why not discover the town's Roman history? You can see the museum from the harbour, we're in the quirky building on the Sea Brows.

The museum has a free car park. Or, if you feel like a challenge, there is an alternative walking route that includes the steps made famous by L.S. Lowry.

The Five Good Emperors

This week is your last chance to see our display highlighting the lives of the five ‘good emperors’ who ruled Rome around the time Roman Maryport was established. From 23 May we will have a new coin display featuring Vespasian and his dynasty.

Would you be interested in volunteering with us? We’re looking for people to help guide tours around the remains of the Roman fort in Maryport.

The fort at Alauna was occupied for nearly 300 years by hundreds of Roman soldiers including the intriguingly named First Cohort of Dalmatians and First Cohort of Baetasians. Every Sunday afternoon from the end of May through the summer our guides give tours of the fort which is not normally open to the public. We need volunteers to help with these and possibly other roles within the museum. You would need to be fairly active, the fort site is 1.8 hectares (4.5 acres in old money!), but if you want to enjoy the spectacular views while someone else does the talking then this might be for you! There would also be the opportunity to learn more and guide tours yourself if this is something you’d be interested in.

We wouldn’t ask you to commit to every week, just what you’re comfortable with so if this sounds interesting then get in touch here or via our website www.senhousemuseum.co.uk
