Built on the original 1859 Brecon & Merthyr Railway line, weโ€™ve been welcoming passengers since 1980. BMR was built on part of the abandoned Brecon & Merthyr Railway opened in 1859,finally closing in 1964. BMR opened to passengers in 1980 and now runs to Torpantau, high in the Brecon Beacons on its 10 mile round trip through beautiful Welsh scenery.

Join us tomorrow for another run behind our Brecon Mountain Railway steam loco. The sunshine might have gone, but the steam, the sounds and the views across the National Park are very much still here.

Weโ€™re now running 6 days a week, only closing on Fridays.

and two pictures of our loco No.2. The first (from Richard Hooper) of the loco parked in a lay-by between Cefn Coed and Trefechan in early 1980โ€™s, and the second showing the slight difference we see today. A testament to our founder Tony Hills drive and ambition!

Spring views from Brecon Mountain Railway

As the days get longer, the ride up with Brecon Mountain Railway changes again, softer light on the reservoir, fresh green on the slopes and clear views across the mountains of the National Park. It is a gentle way to enjoy big scenery, especially if not everyone in your group wants a long walk.

Sit back, listen to the steam engine and watch spring arrive on the hillsides, from the comfort of your seat.

Try our new open-sided excursion car this week

Our new American-style excursion car is now running on all Brecon Mountain Railway services. Open sides mean fresh air, wide views, and the full sound and smell of a steam loco at work, which has gone down very well in this heatwave.

The round trip takes around 1 hour 40 minutes, with a 35 minute break at Pontsticill to stretch your legs, admire the views and enjoy our cafรฉ. While we are running the excursion car, seats are not allocated, so you can choose on the day between the open carriage or one of our enclosed coaches, first come, first served.

You will travel through the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park with views of the Taf Fechan Reservoir and Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales.

Booking online is essential this week as demand is high and trains are often full.
