On 14 May, we welcomed the New Contemporaries cohort to Middlesbrough. ✨

Since 1949, New Contemporaries has been supporting artists at the start of their careers through exhibitions, mentoring, residencies and public programming, with an established track record for spotting talent.

After its first stop at the South London Gallery, New Contemporaries opened at Middlesbrough's very own Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. Featuring 26 artists from across the UK, with work spanning painting, sculpture, installation, photography and moving image, it's fresh, bold and well worth a visit.

To mark the occasion, we hosted the opening after party, an evening curated by our good friends A Man Called Adam, featuring an eclectic mix of performances from exciting local artists. 💚

Over the past three years we’ve been working on FORGED with Navigator North, a joint initiative supported by Tees Valley Combined Authority. Taking an action-research approach to public art practice, we looked closely at the commission and fabrication supply chain, working to lower access barriers for artists entering the public realm and increase engagement with stakeholders across the region.

Through this work we’ve supported artists through new public art commissions, developed a regional fabricator directory and published our Public Art Action Plan with Beam.

This month, we celebrated it all over two days at The Auxiliary, gathering artists, fabricators and commissioners to explore public art and how it shapes a place.

💚 Thanks to our host Stella Hall and to the speakers who sparked conversation across Friday’s panels: Vicky Holbrough, Adam Shaw, Rueben Kench, Liam Slevin, Edel O’Reilly, Kate Watson, Frances Smith, Alia Gargum, David Stupple, and Stuart Langley via video. And thanks to Sue Loughlin and Catherine Howell for leading planting activities and carrying the conversation around public art into Saturday.

On this day 10 years ago, we hosted our first ever event at a three-bedroom house on Shaftesbury Street in Stockton.

Liam Slevin and Anna Byrne left their homeland of Ireland for Detroit, and then Berlin, before arriving in Teesside in 2016 where they built The Auxiliary with all they had.

“At the time I was making about £70 a week, so it was a very small amount of money, and we ran the residency voluntarily for the first few years putting all of our savings into - which wasn’t much mind, but it was still all in.” Liam, Auxiliary Artistic Director.

Ten years later, The Auxiliary now exists as an 11,000 sq ft artist-led project space, packed with 27 artist studios, a gallery, and a music venue with a fully licensed bar.

❗❗❗ WE NEED YOUR HELP ❗❗❗

Since August 2025, a local property developer has been disrupting our connection to electricity. They are in dispute with Northern Powergrid about this. After months of wrangling between Northern Power and the property developer, we were finally given the go-ahead for the electricity to be connected this morning, Tuesday, April 7.

Now, for the third time since August they have obstructed this. Today there was a purposefully parked car there stopping the dig by Northern Powergrid. On each occasion these interruptions were accompanied with intimidating behaviour which has been reported to the police.

Our partners, Arts Council England (ACE), Middlesbrough Development Corporation (MDC), Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA), Middlesbrough Council (MBC), and Northern Powergrid agree that this behaviour is illegal.

We are an arts organisation supporting communities of Middlesbrough with free access to arts festivals, gigs and exhibitions. We have 27 artists waiting to get into their studios. We are asking you to help us put pressure on Northern Power to resolve this as soon as possible.

🔗 If you’re a resident of Middlesbrough, please contact Andy McDonald with the template email linked. Anyone can contact Northern Power Grid. Find more information about how to help here: https://www.theauxiliary.co.uk/news/we-need-your-help

Please share far and wide.

We need immediate action.

Join us for a cosy morning of festive wreath-making this Saturday at Common Ground.

Using a beautiful selection of foliage and natural elements, you’ll have the chance to craft your own unique wreath to take home and enjoy.

Wreath making involves quite a bit of hands-on work and good manual dexterity, so it isn’t suitable for younger children to do independently. Little ones are very welcome to join in by helping their grown-up. We’ll also have a range of engaging activities for younger ones to enjoy.

📅 Saturday, December 13th - 10am to 12pm
☕ Light refreshments provided
📍The Auxiliary, 31 Station Street, TS1 1SR
