Yesterday, we commemorated 82 years since D Day. And of course, there are now very few Veterans left to tell the story. We were recently fortunate enough to meet Richard and record his story. Desperate to be a land Army girl, and to be with her friends, Edna, was refused leave from the Slipper factory in Lancaster. Even after approaching a farmer in Heysham, who was happy to take her, her bosses still stopped her. 'That's enough now, you don't go'. Edna's slipper making skills, were clearly something rather special. Her accounts of the local cinemas and standing at the top of the entrance staircase of the Winter Gardens ballroom, where her and her friends could assess which of the RAF trainees were the best dancers, are just a few of her vivid local wartime memories.
