We are saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend Jean Hersh, a woman of extraordinary strength, determination and clarity.

To so many of us at Beth Shalom, as she always called it, Jean was a rock. Fiercely dependable, resilient, and full of grit, she was someone whose presence and strength could always be relied upon. Her love and support of Arek during the thirty years they were coming and speaking at the museum was incredible to see.

Jean brought a no-nonsense spirit, but also warmth, humour, and deep care. She helped shape not only this museum, but the lives of countless people connected to it.

Her loss will be felt deeply by us all.

After the Holocaust, survivors often used creative outlets to process their traumatic experiences. Now digitised on Google Arts & Culture, ‘Rabbi & Bar Mitzvah boy’ (1986) by Stanislaw Brunstein is an example of this post-liberation artwork.

In his paintings Stanislaw Brunstein reimagines traditional Yiddish speaking Jewish communities that were lost in the Holocaust. This painting of a rabbi and his student expresses the 4,000-year-old tradition of passing down Jewish culture and learning. His bright, expressive paintings of Jewish life help him to confront the loss of his family in Treblinka Death Camp and find comfort in his identity.

Read more about Stanislaw Brunstein, how he survived forced labour in Siberia, and became a renowned artist on our Google Arts & Culture page. https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/rabbi-bar-mitzvah-boy-stainslaw-brunstein-artist/0gE_5V3l8aUl6g

Join the rally and stand up against anti-Jewish hatred and extremism this Sunday 10th of May at 1pm in Central London.

After a wave of violent attacks against synagogues and Jews in Britain, it is more important than ever to stand alongside our Jewish communities in combatting extreme hatred.

Standing strong. Extinguish antisemitism.

Join us for Refugee Week: How Lives Are Changed by War
What begins as a surreal morning of explosions and disbelief becomes a life-changing decision: whether to stay, where to go, and how to leave. In How NOT to Flee a War, Ukrainian journalist Maria Romanenko and Jez Myers share a first-hand account of trying to escape Kyiv as Russia launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, told through personal storytelling and images from the road. Earlier in the day, we will also screen Arek, following Arek Hersh MBE, displaced after the Holocaust/World War 2, with an opportunity to meet Arek afterwards and have his book signed.
