Apedale Valley Light Railway

Apedale Valley Light Railway The Moseley Railway Trust is a registered charity, run entirely by volunteers.

A 2 foot (600mm) gauge railway built and operated by the Moseley Railway Trust. 1/2 mile round trip, using steam and diesel locos, running through the Apedale Community Country Park. It exists to preserve narrow gauge railway equipment and uses the Apedale Valley Light Railway as a means of showing you how this equipment worked in industry before the use of conveyor belts and forklift trucks. The

Trust started in 1969 as an after-school club at the Moseley Hall Grammar School in Stockport, only leaving Stockport when a new home was needed in 1998. In 2006, work began at Apedale to build a new railway and museum, and eventually this railway will run for about a mile into the Apedale Community Country Park.

The planned locos for June are as follows:

6 June - "Stanhope", 7 June - diesel.

13 & 14 June - Hunslet 1215. This will be the last chance to see this loco operate, as it'd due its annual boiler exam. All being well, it will be back in service for the September gala.

20 June - "Ogwen". 21 June - diesel.

27 & 28 June - Motor Rail Mania - the internal combustion fleet takes over for the weekend!

Thanks to Mr Ben Wiles for the image.

It's Volunteers Week - see https://volunteersweek.org/, so we thought we'd show you a typical job undertaken by our wonderful team. The objective was to set concrete to create the footings for a low retaining wall. The low retaining wall will form the access to the new museum main entrance area and the toilet area. This was hard work on a hot day - but necessary, and all involved learnt about concreting! That shows key benefits of volunteering - working as part of team to a common purpose, and learning new skills.

Motor Rail 7522 of 1948 is one of the manufacturer's 8/12HP class. Only a handful were built, and only two survive (as far as we know). They were an unconventional design, intended to compete with Lister in the market for lightweight locos. It was originally restored at the Cheadle school railway, and ran there for a number of years. After the school railway closed, the loco moved elsewhere. Unfortunately, during that period, the loco suffered a serious engine failure, causing catastrophic damage to the single-cylinder Ailsa Craig engine with which it was fitted. More recent times have seen the loco "return to the fold" at Apedale, and a replacement engine sourced. The replacement engine was configured for a marine application, including driving a specific gearbox. This meant that a considerable amount of work is needed, including a crankshaft transplant, to make the replacement engine suitable for MR7522. That work is continuing at the moment. Will the loco make an appearance at Motor Rail Mania - June 27 & 28? Only time will tell.
