Art from the Lens gallery

Art from the Lens gallery Currently an online gallery specialising in original vintage photographs and commissions.

Small gallery specialising in the art of photography and photographic associated services. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are currently trading online only at the moment, with a short term aim to be at local art and market events very soon, whilst new gallery space is sourced.

This place of noise and rhythm,
of shouts and grim determination.
From fire and earth she was born,
To ride the waters for freedom hoped.

Another from the collection of magic lantern slides from the 1940's along the River Tyne.

From Whitby to Newcastle to London and back, this wonderful carbon print by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe is a triumph of photographer and printer.
Expensive to print and an attempt by the photographer to sell more art prints, which failed somewhat.
A familiar face and voice in the huddled yards, alleys and quayside, this moment shows the trust both sitter and photographer had in each other.
Despite her years, she had skills to earn her place at the dining table.
A chore repeated across the town, city and village where common sense and poverty combined to repair a garment rather than sell it to the ragman.

Bank holiday vibes alfresco dinner.
Another from a small collection of images from Catherine W**d Barnes Ward and her husband Henry Snowdon Ward capturing the late 1890's social world in Victorian Britain.
Catherine was from the USA, but became a life long promoter of female inclusion within photography.
Class, fashion and social history all in one photograph.

When you get invited to all the right parties, you have to dress the part.
Part of the US female powerhouse early Victorian photographer Catherine W**d Barnes album.

A lovely photo by the eye and hand of of Whitby fame.
Full of detail and insight into the working life of fishermen.
It's also signed on the verso as well as all the annotations on the front.
Just one of many gems from last weekend.

When you actually find a bit of photography inside the V&A in the reading lobby. A display of the Sun Artists. And local lad is there leading the way.
The video doesn't do the original photograph of the "Boat Builders" justice, that is in our permanent collection. ( New phone required) .
It shimmers and holds shadow and light in a way that is magical and shows why this work changed Europe and the world's viewpoint on what could be done with a camera..
He was also no slouch with his patients to improve cycling. Big hills in the north.

Dear , I think for all the song and dance you made about high jacking photography collections from across the UK and the money, sorry, funding grab that went with it, the photography gallery sucked.
I have a bigger collection of prints ( including the one above in direct sunlight) from 1840's onwards on display than you do.
And then you close the art library so only London people can use it. Tuesday to Thursday, really?
I see the less is more approach to the displays, but to hide away the photograph collection is a crime.
You don't want it, move it to Birmingham where it's more accessible to the UK or split it between Leeds and Birmingham because you are not doing a very good job are you?
had better display at

The more you look, the more you see in these magic lantern slides of the docks in the 1940's

Take one American lady who loved photography and getting other women both involved and taken seriously, add a pinch of England and a whole lot of connections and you end up not only building a wonderful published collection of work, you end up with images in an album covering the British Isles.
Catherine W**d Barnes a force in her lifetime and her husband, Henry Snowdon Ward captured both buildings and people during their careers.

A movie line born in Hollywood, but fitting for this view of the docks in the 1940's along the River Tyne.
A piece of Tyneside history
