Bessie Surtees House

Bessie Surtees House A Jacobean home with a romantic history, Bessie Surtees House contains offices, an exhibition space and splendid period interiors.

The two buildings now known as Bessie Surtees House stand on a stretch of Newcastle riverfront that has been used as a quayside since Roman times, when the first bridge was built over the Tyne. By the 16th century the commercial importance of the area was well established and many prominent merchants owned property here. The two buildings, originally numbers 41 and 44 Sandhill, were known respecti

vely as Surtees House and Milbank House. Other houses further east along Sandhill are of a similar date.

The origins of Bessie Surtees House

The earliest record of a house on the site of Surtees House dates back to 1465, when it was owned by Robert Rhodes, a wealthy lawyer.

In 1657, a marriage between Thomas Davison and a daughter of Ralph Cocke—Mayor of Newcastle in 1634—was commemorated with carved stonework above the fireplace in the principal room on the first floor. The house stayed in their family for over 100 years, until it was sold in 1770 to Snow Clayton, a successful merchant, beginning a new chapter in the building’s long history.

The site now comprises two magnificent five-storey Newcastle merchants’ houses, dating from the mid-17th century.
