Newport Museum and Art Gallery Newport Museum & Art Gallery is in John Frost Square, Newport. We are looking forward to welcoming you back in the building early next year.

Newport Museum and Art Gallery will be closed for several months from Saturday, 23 July 2022, while work takes place to create an Information Hub and accommodate a variety of Newport City Council services previously located in the Information Station. Apologies for the obvious inconvenience caused and many thanks for your patience.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of artist, Kevin Sinnott this summer.

Born in Sarn near Bridgend in 1947, he studied art in Cardiff, Gloucestershire and the Royal College of Art, London. His work gained international acclaim, being acquired by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum, Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales and our own museum's collection in Newport. He taught at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford and St Martin's School of Art, London.

Kevin Sinnott's expressive oil on canvas, 'Geometry Lesson Beach Five' can be seen in Newport Museum and Art Gallery's current exhibition, 'Gifted - Newport and the Contemporary Art Society for Wales' until 9th January 2027.

Fe’i ganwyd yn Sarn ger Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr ym 1947 cyn astudio celf yng Nghaerdydd, Swydd Gaerloyw a Choleg Brenhinol Celf Llundain. Roedd ei waith o fri rhyngwladol, ac yn cael ei gasglu gan sefydliadau fel yr Amgueddfa Fetropolitanaidd Gelf, Amgueddfa Prydain, Amgueddfa Cymru, a’n hamgueddfa ein hunain yng Nghasnewydd. Bu’n addysgu yn Ysgol Gelf Ruskin, Rhydychen ac Ysgol Gelf Sant Martin, Llundain.

Mae darlun olew ar gynfas mynegiannol Kevin Sinnott, ‘Geometry Lesson Beach Five’, i’w weld yn arddangosfa bresennol Amgueddfa ac Oriel Celf Casnewydd sef ‘'Gifted – Casnewydd a Chymdeithas Celfyddyd Gyfoes Cymru' tan 9 Ionawr 2027.

Join us from Saturday 26 September for Gifted, a new exhibition curated by Dr Peter Wakelin, celebrating more than 80 years of donations from the Contemporary Art Society for Wales to Newport Museum and Art Gallery.

Featuring works by over 40 acclaimed artists, including Peter Blake, William Scott, John Selway, Patricia Preece / Dorothy Hepworth, and Christopher Wood, Gifted showcases a rich and eclectic collection of work, including paintings, sculpture and ceramics.

From our collections …

Autumn has arrived, and with it, the first fruiting bodies of fungi. Their strange shapes are the eye-catching evidence of underground root-like networks known as mycelia. These invisible networks connect trees, wildflowers, and grasses across our woodlands and meadows.

We love this small, mysterious ceramic by Margaret Shotton in the form of a mushroom. Its smooth shape and pale, largely unglazed finish make it a charming lookalike. And with a final flourish, the stalk lifts a lid to reveal a secret container!

From our collections …

September 12th is the 120th anniversary of the Newport Transporter Bridge’s opening. It was designed by R.H. Haynes, the Borough Engineers of Newport and internationally renowned transporter bridge engineer, Ferdinand Arnodin.

The bridge was created to transport passengers and vehicles across the River Usk via a suspended gondola. The high walkway of the bridge allowed tall ships to pass underneath between the gondola’s crossings.

Mae 12 Medi yn nodi 120 mlynedd ers agor Pont Gludo Casnewydd. Fe'i cynlluniwyd gan R.H Haynes, Peirianwyr Bwrdeistref Casnewydd a'r peiriannydd pontydd cludo o fri rhyngwladol, Ferdinand Arnodin.

Adeiladwyd y bont i gludo teithwyr a cherbydau ar draws Afon Wysg mewn gondola crog. Roedd rhodfa uchel y bont yn caniatáu i longau mawr basio oddi tano pan nad yw’r gondola yn croesi.

On Saturday Joe and Nigel Talbot gave a personal tour of their exhibition: MUSOLEUM – Remembrance of Remembering. The sold-out tour was a roller coaster of amusing anecdotes, shared experiences and poignant memories from a father and son’s relationship.

Visitors have less than a week left to see this popular exhibition, which finishes at 16:00 on Saturday 12 September. Don’t miss out!

Get creative this autumn half-term with local community artist Lucilla Jones. Join us for free craft-based activities on the Museum Mezzanine on the second floor. There's no need to book, simply drop in anytime between 11am and 3pm. Suitable for children aged 3 to 10 years. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult.
