🎉 It's Volunteers' Week! 🎉📣🥳

All the staff at Newton Abbot Museum want to say a MASSIVE thank you to our incredible volunteers, whose enthusiasm, dedication and support help make everything we do possible.

Our volunteers are involved in every aspect of museum life. They help care for our collections, deliver education workshops, welcome visitors at the front desk, support special activities and events, carry out research, and so much more.

Whether they're sharing their knowledge, lending a helping hand, or bringing fresh ideas to the museum, their contribution is invaluable. Without our volunteers, we wouldn't be able to achieve all the great things we do. ❤️

Keep an eye on our page this week as we shine a spotlight on some of the amazing people who volunteer with us.

🔎🐁 Take part in the search quest for our Tower Mouse! 🐭

Our tower mouse is very busy every night sweeping the stairs and scurrying through the dark corners of the old medieval tower while everyone else is fast asleep.

But when morning comes and visitors arrive, the shy little mouse disappears into a secret hiding place somewhere inside the tower. No one knows exactly where she hides during the day…

Can you explore the tower and discover where our clever little tower mouse is hiding today? Keep your eyes open — she could be anywhere!

🐀 When you've found her, pick up a special sticker for your pastport.

Today’s is an object that has been selected as part of the What’s in Store collections booklet - Royal Horse Artillery jacket.

This jacket was part of a Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) uniform worn during the First World War. It belonged to local man Serjeant William West, known as ‘Winky’, who served in India during the war. The RHA, founded in 1793, provided firepower in support of the cavalry.

During the war ‘Winky’ received a bullet wound to the back and on his return to Newton Abbot continued his work with horses delivering bread on horse and cart.

✨Fascinating facts: As well as indicating a soldier’s rank, uniforms were practical; everything had a purpose. For example, the lines on this jacket could be used as reins for a horse, the buttons, known as ball buttons, could traditionally be used as musket balls and hats could be used as water buckets.
