There is something truly special about a summer day surrounded by historic vehicles, wonderful people, and the stories of years gone by.

We are delighted to announce that our next Museum Open Day will take place on:

Saturday 25th July 2026
10:00am – 4:00pm
Aycliffe Bus Museum, Burtree Road, Newton Aycliffe, DL5 6BL

Our museum will once again open its doors to visitors from across the region, offering the opportunity to explore our collection, discover the history of public transport, and enjoy a wonderful gathering of heritage vehicles.

Adding to the occasion will be a splendid display of classic cars, which will line our museum forecourt and help create a truly nostalgic atmosphere. From lovingly preserved classics to rare vehicles from years gone by, these magnificent machines are always a highlight of the day and a reminder of Britain's rich motoring heritage.

Whether you're a transport enthusiast, a classic vehicle admirer, a keen photographer, or simply looking for a unique day out with family and friends, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

After the glorious sunshine we experienced last week, we're hoping the weather gods are kind to us once again, allowing our vehicles and visiting exhibits to shine in all their splendour.

The museum exists thanks to the passion and dedication of our volunteers, and every visitor helps support our mission of preserving transport history for future generations.

We look forward to welcoming old friends and new faces alike for what promises to be another memorable day at Aycliffe Bus Museum.

See you on Saturday 25th July!

Today marks the final day that Bristol K Type GHN 189 and Bristol Tow Truck FHN 923 "The Old Darling" will be on display at Beamish Museum as part of the Festival of Transport.

Throughout the week, these historic vehicles from the Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society collection have helped tell the story of transport in the North East, allowing thousands of visitors to experience an important part of our region's heritage.

GHN 189, the oldest surviving United double-decker bus, and FHN 923, a rare and fascinating example of a working recovery vehicle, will return to Aycliffe Bus Museum following today's event.

If you're planning a visit to Beamish today, be sure to stop by and see these remarkable vehicles before they head home.

We would like to thank Beamish Museum, its staff and volunteers, and everyone who has taken the time to visit, photograph, and learn about these important pieces of transport history.

Before smartphones, satellite navigation, and real-time travel updates, the local bus was often the lifeline of the community.

For many people across County Durham and the North East, buses provided access to work, education, shopping, healthcare, and social activities, connecting towns and villages long before widespread car ownership.

The vehicles preserved at Aycliffe Bus Museum represent much more than transport. They tell the story of everyday life, community connections, and the changing face of the region throughout the twentieth century.

Every preserved bus helps us remember how previous generations travelled, worked, and lived.

When visitors step aboard one of our historic buses, they see a beautifully preserved vehicle. What they don't always see is the countless hours of work that take place behind the scenes.

From routine maintenance and mechanical repairs to research, cleaning, painting, and sourcing rare parts, our volunteers dedicate thousands of hours each year to preserving North East transport heritage.

Every vehicle in our collection has a story to tell, and preserving those stories for future generations is at the heart of everything we do.

Next time you visit, remember that every polished handrail, destination blind, and engine note is the result of passion, dedication, and teamwork.
