We couldn't be more excited to receive Museums Galleries Scotland funding for our skills innovation project and we're excited to be part of this cohort of museums leading the way on new initiatives. We've truly enjoyed meeting them all at different events throughout the year and now we're looking forward to getting going on our new project!

Under blistering skies, we were back at Port Castle, in the interior of the building this time, trying to uncover its secrets. Previous C14 dating from a single oat gave a mid to late 15th Century date. This time more of the unmortared wall appeared - and finally a slabbed floor, with dark charcoal spread beneath. We hope to hear more once this is dated. Our thanks as always to our volunteers and staff Ruaridh Soutar and Tom MacFarlane, and AOC Archaeology Group

We had some young experts from Garlieston School to test the entire range of digital that we use to visualise the past as part of their technology project : our new VR experience ("cool!"), the AR app, 3D objects and facial reconstruction are all ways of seeing into the past. Children got to see the real Iron Age objects, the virtual ones, both inside and outside of a virtual world, and physical reconstruction, to compare and contrast different methods of bringing archaeology and past lives to life. Our thanks to Robyn Matthews and Ruaridh Soutar for guiding and to the school for coming along. Urbancroft Films

There's nothing like a sunny Bank Holiday weekend for bringing out the visitors: our staff were busy today, managing tours and food provision! We're excited to see the start of our medieval workshop, with Whithorn ReBuild trainees and Douglas-Ewart High School pupils having a busy few weeks ahead, traditionally hewing the beams for the timber frame.

One of our old favourites is back in stock : a teatowel with views of Whithorn's buildings, depicted in the classic architectural plan of Whithorn by architects Richard and Betty Moira, who worked in the town in the 1950's and fell in love with the streetscape, donating their finely drawn and coloured plan to the burgh. The original now hangs in the museum.
