*A name with meaning*
Exactly one year ago today, after many months of patiently waiting, I finally found premises in North Berwick suitable for a little gallery (it took a further frustrating six months to sort out, but that’s another story!).
Today marks the anniversary of the day I rang the agent and left a message to request a viewing. Later, I had a drink with a good friend and we chatted about fun things like business names. Lots of possibilities were bandied around, including Hilda — my paternal grandmother’s name — someone I loved and admired immensely. Quite fittingly, it also happened to be .
The original Germanic form of the name, Hilde, means “battle”. Nana Hilda had a hard life (as many of her generation did) and I’ve personally had a lifelong battle with my health — Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, with its delightful flare-ups and co-morbidities — so the name felt very fitting indeed.
And so Hilde Gallery was born (six months later!).
My grandmother was a funny, straight-talking, formidable northern woman who was sadly widowed in her early 50s. She passed away when I was 13. I don’t know if she cared much for art, but she was wonderfully creative. I remember making Christmas decorations with her, and she could knit in her sleep.
I hope wherever she is, she’s tickled that I named the gallery after her. I like to think she’s watching over me — no doubt frustrated that I don’t sweep the pavement as often as she would, and probably tutting when I mutter the occasional swearword under my breath after hours (soz nana!).
Happy International Women’s Day to all the strong and mighty women out there. I feel very lucky to know many of you. X
