About 70 Freemen of Norwich and family gathered today at Narflex rooms of the Roman Catholic Cathedral for the 'Social & Showcase' meeting. We learned about the new grants available to Freemen and about the forthcoming committee elections as well as some information about the websites and communication. Afterwards the 'social' continued with a buffet and drinks. If you attended, let us know what you thought about the event.

Some sad news to share with you from Nigel Back.

I was so sad to hear of the untimely passing of Lizzie Griffiths, someone we got to know well whilst she joined with the Freemen to take charge of not only the update of Buxom to the Mayor but more prominently the digitisation of every single hand written entry in the Norwich Freemen’s Register kept in the Records Office and the City Hall. This is a complex project which required highly skilled academic involvement in the translation and transcription of the registers beginning in 1371. Lizzie with her characteristic enthusiasm and humour set in train the whole project. Whilst it became at times a logistical challenge, she secured the academic support she needed but in her own inimitable style and made it an interesting experience for us all. Without her involvement though, the project simply would never have happened.

Elizabeth Rutledge has worked with her over several years as well as on the Norwich Freemen’s Registers project and has written the piece on our website:

We would like to share our thanks to Robert Self for his long term service award for serving 25 years on the committee and 20 years as a trustee of the charity. We would also like to recognise and thank the incredible 30 years that John Symonds has served on the Freemen committee, who was not at the...
